is a Disco 4 an equal big moneypit as the Disco 3?

After the EPB actuator failed a couple of weeks ago and I had to replace it, this week the in-tank fuelpump went.
Two of this jokes in one month is making it extremely costly to run a Disco 3.
Since I am getting kind of desperate and I am thinking to swop the Discovery 3 for a Discovery 4.
But is the 4 is an equal big moneypit as the 3?

When you think about it, its basically the same car just updated/upgraded so you know the answer already.
But you could have the exact same issues with the D4, as epb actuators and in tank pumps are really a one time replacement only, so now you have done them?

The D3 I had cost me far more than the last D4 even though it had done less than half the miles.

Been running the D4 for 12 and a bit months now & 15k miles, and nothing has gone wrong. Nothing, nada, niet, zip. At the same stage in the D3's life no way could that be said, it was costing WD (and me) a small fortune. Now they are recouping their loses, no way would I run a D4 without a warranty. It might be coz the car was looked after, i.e. not thrashed off-road and kept in a nice warm garage. Just hoping it continues.

What went wrong with the D3? And how did LR improve it on the D4?

Anything with 3 letter acronym bit fixed (EGR, EPB, EIF, etc) that could go wrong went wrong. Was in virtually monthly for something, be it bearings, bushes, EGRs, leaks, you name it, it needed fixed. Fine in warranty but out of warranty was getting painful. Mistake I made was hanging on to the car far too long, resulting in it being scrapped in a country far, far away. Mistake I won't be making again.

Do I notice a big improvement in the D4 over the D3? No. It's the same car, newer & fraction of the miles so smoother and posher as it's an HSE rather than an S (had a 06 HSE for a while and it's virtually identical). The D4 is like wearing a posh set of Oxfords, D3 a well broken in pair of hiking boots. They just seem to have sorted out everything with 3 letters. Thumbs Up

Seems to be but i don't know if that is because D4 has lead a super sheltered life and the D3 was thrashed off-road from virtually its first week. I'm just pleased I was able to jump in the D4 and head off on a nearly 5k mile fast (for me) haul up to NW Norway and back and she didn't miss a beat. That was super stressful and if she'd thrown a hissyfit she'd be gone now.

And reassuringly it's mpg is virtually identical to my D3 on same trips so it's reassuringly thirsty!! Laughing Laughing

PS She's shaping up to be a good RT car, second batt and load deck are in and I'm getting her to just how I like her. Now that's the kiss of doom!!!! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

My D4 was also very good and we suffered no issues during an 18month ownership.

My experience: bought a 2007 HSE in Feb 2012 for £16250 (90,000 miles)

Usual suspension components replaced, alternator and compressor etc. Also replaced air con compressor which must admit I didn't expect.

Last 2 years had only routine maintenance.

If engine blew up tomorrow I would consider I'd had 5 years happy motoring.

Plan on keeping the D3 for as long as possible 😁

Thumbs Up

I bought my D3 nearly 3 years ago and noticed there were very few posts ref engine issues with the D4, but in the last 12 months theres been plenty of posts about the 3.0 playing up or going tits up.

How much of a money pit and how do you really know that is why someone is selling there D3? Difficult to answer but something I am concerned about.

Never had a problem with my D3, all the same bits on from when it was new
