V8 D3 LEAN RUNNING LEFT AND RIGHT BANK ??
Have the dreaded light from hell again my workshop have told me its left and right bank running lean ?? he said no air leaks and that its possibly stretched timing chains?? when you drive steady at stay 40 mph you can see the oscillation on the rev counter and physically hear the engine tone going up and down ??
any help please
.

I've a similar issue with the added problem of high fuel consumption. I have been through all the sensors to check they're functioning ok and have concluded that it may be a faulty MAF. New one on order and hopefully be fitted this week.
Stretched timing chains, while not totally impossible, would be at the bottom of my list of causes as 'Duplex' chains are pretty tough and not prone to that type of damage.
These engines can show lean/rich mixes due to problems with any of the sensors, MAP, CPS, MAF, and O2 sensors. Even dirty or non functioning injectors, low fuel pressure or weak coils could cause similar fault readings as the oxygen levels fluctuate and the O2 sensors read rich then lean as the ECM tries to adapt and get the correct mix.
You need to have the codes read and each of the sensors tested for proper functioning. The last job I'd have done would be new chains as it is a huge job on the V8, front cover need to come off and it takes hours to do.

Try cleaning the MAF and the throttle body. MAF cleaner is cheap and the jobs about 10mins start to finish. Throttle body would take 30 -40mins and requires no specialist tools. There are a few threads on here about how to do it and a few good videos on utube.

Change the PCV value as well whilst you have the TB off.

The D3 V8 4.4 tens to be a sturdy reliable engine very few have timing chain issues those who do have been neglected to oil changes, etc. Many here in the states (USA) have over 200K & 300K miles without engine issues.
