D3 2008 HSE - replace engine or scrap it
After spending thousands over the last few years keeping our D3 in top maintained condition the crankshaft has snapped meaning a new engine is needed.
Question is do I replace the engine then sell the D3 (or partx) or cut loses and scrap it?
It has done 150,000 miles and in last 12 months had new torque converter, front suspension, V8 brake upgrade, all oils changed as book. New battery 2 weeks ago..
Before engine failure probably worth £8k-£9k but now worth fa.
Any inspiration welcome

It boils down to how much will it cost you to get it back on the road. I know stating the bleedin obvious. When doing the maths careful to be realistic on how much your car is worth, you'll have to be hard nosed when working things out. I know we get attached to these cars but they are only cars.

The next generation is not as capable or multi purpose enough for me plus far too expensive and engine wise even more risk so I would spend the money for an engine after what you have spent on the rest and hope you get more than 150,000 next time the loss on the vehicle has already happened the loss on a newer one could be as much as your engine will cost. The only time I wouldn’t say this is to those that permanently rent their vehicles but never own.

What's to guarantee that the next engine won't snap?
Can anyone rebuild them yet?

Ex works supply rebuilt there are now several mentions on here of engine replacement this way Disco Mikey has done a couple at least, and that was my point about newer vehicles the 3.0ltr seems more prone than 2.7Ltr.

Mine is 232,000 miles 07 plate. New LR engine £3,500+vat.
Currently changing it and cleaning the chassis up.
I’ll gave incested more than it’s worth but if you spent the same on a replacement D3 then you’d have all the wishbones and other bits to do. So costs you more in the long run.
It’s a Shane to see so many good cars scrapped because of a failed engine.Bodsys Brake Bible

Your car is worth (to you) what it would cost to replace with a different car which gives you the same satisfaction and pleasure.2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

Martin, sorry to hear this. Grim news indeed. In the cold light of day, if you want to stay in a Disco then repairing it is the most cost effective and least risk way of doing it. Same as Bodsy, it's a known vehicle to you.
If it's purely a financial sum, then maybe you shouldn't have bought a Disco You will be throwing away past investment if you do walk away, and will still need to buy a car.
I'd get it fixed.

Thanks everyone for your contributions - There is never a 'right' choice to make in this situation.
I'm waiting for a price from the garage to fit a new engine but have been warned already that additional parts may need replacing as they strip the engine down (e.g. turbo) - effectively meaning that the price they quote is an estimate and could rise during the work.
Unfortunately the wife wants rid regardless whether its sold 'as is', broken for parts or fixed.
I'd always spent money on it when required to maintain to a high standard so very disappointed that the engine has gone bust in the way that it has.
Martin, your story (and Bodsy and Del's) is why I took my beloved 160,000 mile D3 down to the volvo dealership today and agreed P/ex on a new XC60. Sad times.......

Al,
I’m astounded!
Have to say that going that direction was never a thought in my mind and definitely still isn’t!Bodsys Brake Bible

In that case there is only sensible route, disposal. Fitting a replacement engine will never up her value to what you need to pay for the engine. Selling on as is or stripping & getting rid of the carcass to a dismantler are your only realistic options.

But surely you have just lost the cost of a new engine if it ever happens by buying a new car??
You have lost 20% vat straight away! If you wanted a new car, that’s different of course!

I've got 3 holidays planned this year, 2 that involve taking my 80 year old mother to visit Ypres and the Somme to visit relative's graves. Not keen on being stranded with a belligerent old dear in the car with me! That aside, I've had this car 10 years, it's been stunning, but:
It needs a new T/C, it coming up for another big service, a couple of bushes starting to show signs of needing replacement, corrosion concerns (see Bodsy's strip down for an indication of what hides behind the wheel arches), rear brakes need sorting soon and the risk of the engine going pop 5 minutes after doing all that?
Even without the engine I'm looking at at least £2500 this year. Add the engine and turbo (you wouldn't stick a 160k turbo on a new engine) and you're closer to £8-9k on a car worth £5k.
No thanks.
And you're right, I do fancy a new car. A new car that will average just shy of 40mpg, 0-60 in 6.4 and includes all servicing and warranty for 3 years, with road tax of £140 and much lower insurance
