Transmission Fault

Hi Guys,

I have a D3 2005 HSE TDV6. Last couple of weeks I've started getting an error when driving, saying 'Transmission Fault' on the dash. I hear a ping, transmission fault pops up and then it appears that I have limited gears. I canb't manually change gear or put into sports mode (its an auto btw).

I have seen that other people get a load of other errors, HDC, suspension lowering etc. I do not get any of that, simply just Transmission Fault.

The issue tends to only happen under load, so when i'm accelerating up hill (i don't tow anything). I've never noticed it happen driving round town.

I've recently changed my battery as it was struggling on starting a bit, but that now appears to be fine.

From what i've read, it could be gearbox is on its way out? It's done 170k miles. I am due a service though (a bit over due if im being honest!). Could it be the fuel filter clogged up?

I'm very much aware I'd need faults read to properly diagnose. So i'll be dropping Flack/Mick a message to see if he's in my neck of the woods (warrington, cheshire) anytime soon, as he has done some work on my car before.

If it's the gearbox, does anyone have any rough costs, or can recommend any decent indys nearby?

Thanks
Rob

you need to have a fault meter plugged in. without the actual fault is very hard to say.

Hopefully getting faults read in next week or so. In the meantime im going to get the service done on it. See if fuel filter was the issue.

Original battery? Many of those are a symptom of dying battery and/or alternator.

Transmission fault can just be a consequence of an engine related fault. Ie if the turbo is not actuating properly, you’ll get an engine fault and limp mode, but it can also give you a gearbox fault on the dash. Codes will help identify it but I would worry on gearbox specifically until that point.

Thats a good point about the actuator arm. I hadn't thought to check that.

Hopefully all will become clear once I get codes read.

Battery - it's a brand new battery, about a week old. Issue happened before and still happens after battery changed.

Really hope i'm not looking at a £2-3k bill for near gearbox :/
