D3 Gearbox Issue - Advice required |
|
Hello,
I have a 2005 D3 Automatic, still going strong with 165,000 miles on the clock.
The gearbox has been showing the following symptoms, with gradually increasing intensity over the past 8-9 months:
The downshift from 2nd to 1st causes the car to jerk (e.g when the car comes to a stop at a traffic light).
The upshift from 1st to 2nd seems fine with no jerking
All other gear interchanges seem to be ok with no physical symptoms..
When I am on the motorway on a long journey, the Transmission Fault message comes up and the car goes into 'limp' mode, but is drivable (presumable in 3rd gear with no gear interchange). The 'Sports' function and manual gear change as well as all off-road functions are disabled.
When I stop and restart the car, the the fault resets and all functions are enabled again, until the next 'Transmission Fault' message.
Occasionally, on kickdown, The gearbox goes into 'F' (Fault mode ?). A stop/restart of the car resets it.
I am contemplating getting a gearbox flush done, but I am not convinced it will fix the problem.
Any advice or suggestions as to how I can diagnose the problem further would be useful.
Thanks in advance.

These gearboxes require the oil changing every 60,000km even though its sealed for life. The other thing is how is the battery as this makes a big difference to D3's
