Buying & Indie Advice Disco 3 |
|
Hi there,
Relatively new user to the forum though I have posted once before, please see:
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/thinking-ge...79374.html
After much deliberation I have decided to buy a Disco 3 with a budget between £5-10k. I have had a look at a couple already (though they were both pretty beat up) and just wanted to make sure that I am taking note of the most unreliable areas of the car. I have made a checklist of sorts and wondered if you could have a look and let me know if I have missed anything:
- Gearbox: looking for smooth gear changes through all gears, ensure there is no ‘clunkiness’ and odd noises
- Turbo: listen out for any whining noises / sounds
- Suspension: make sure that all wheels go up and down through ride heights without any issues. On this note, what should I be looking out for regards to the noise of the compressor? Also visual check of the air bags to ensure no leaks
- Cambelt: has it been changed and when etc.
- 4x4: ensure car transitions into low gears with no issue
- Electrical: check for any electrical faults and that all ‘gizmos’ work. I.e. heated seats/AC etc etc
- Rust on the tailgate (is this an issue with this car?)
To be honest I am trying to stick to the HSE model only as I like the sunroof’s and leather seats (they are much easier to wipe down). Does the Dicso 3 have an issue with the crankshaft or is this only with the Disco 4’s?
On another note, I live down in Farnborough, Hampshire. Does anyone know of any good indie’s down here? Or perhaps can point me to the place where I might find one?
Many Thanks in advance.

jcooper1459 - Welcome
I personally would avoid sunroofs - particularly in older cars; it's a matter of taste, but leaks can be a pain in the .
Check the service history very carefully, getting copies of relevant invoices, and IMHO it is essential that the oil pump was changed when the belts were done.
Get the full MOT record & check the milage & recent advisories have been rectified.
Good Indy.

Thanks NJSS.
Do you know of any Indie's closer to London? Southampton is a good 45mins - 1hr from us (we are on the Surrey border).
Is there anything that should be 100% avoided when buying?
Also what is the best diagnostic tool for the Disco's? Looking in the low hundreds range to be honest.
Thanks again.
