Torque Coverter Replacement - Transmission Removal |
|
Just recently i have noticed the revs fluctuating and a slight vibration at certain revs.
So instead of Dr Tranny and oil change (had complete oil flush 25k miles ago), i have decided to go straight to the torque converter replacement phase.
I intend to replace it myself in a few weeks time but need to prepare.
I have had quotes from BA Transmissions in Keighley and Sussex Autos for a reconditioned torque converter and both prices are very acceptable, plus a firm in Denton, Manchester can turn around a converter in a day at similar prices.
Although i have used the search function, there is little info on a how to remove the transmission in detail.
I am more than adept, but some info would be helpful.
I understand that the exhaust can be left in place, but will the crossover pipe have to be removed or can the top bracket be worked around. (I will have to look at some of my pictures when i removed the engine for recon).
Apart from the Mechatronic sleeve, anything else worth doing at the same time?
It already has the steel sump.
I will have access to a 2 post ramp for this.

Sure plenty will be able to help, I did mine with the body off. It was so much easier ! If your going from underneath, Props off, transfer box and crossmember off, brackets off the crossover, starter motor out of the way, wiring harness needs unclipping/unbolting off the gear and transfer boxes, breathers off the tops of both, be warned it is seriously heavy ! Some things to check are the crossover pipe for cracks. Far easier with the gearbox out of the way. If you want some photos and more detail give me a shout as I haven’t long done a swap. Jarrod
Current : D3 2007 HSE - AKA the lemon
-beanie grille
-detango with led bulbs
-club body off rebuild. TWICE.

Thanks for that.
I will have the use of a transmission jack and all other workshop facilities thankfully, but will have to do most of the work myself.
I think your idea to remove the transfer box first is probably a good idea as it should make the main tranmission more manageable.
Just for clarity, i assume the crossover pipe has to be removed due to the bracket for the crossover being fixed at both bell housing and top of gearbox?

You only need to remove the brackets for the crossover pipe, not the pipe itself.
Make sure you put them back on! Bodsys Brake Bible

Ah yes thanks, just managed to find one of my pictures of the stripdown which showed that the bracket can be unbolted from the crossover pipe.
I was somehow under the impression that the bracket was welded to the crossover pipe
