Cold start problems, rough idle

In the last few days my D3 has been struggling during start up from cold.

It will fire from first turn of the key but will immediately die, second turn of the key and its ok.

If i blip the throttle it will immediately die.

Throws up a few messages on the dash - 'Engine System failure' and 'Special Programs disabled', these messages disappear with a few seconds and the car seems fine.

If i drive off it will sometimes display that Engine System Failure message again and go into what i think is limp mode (no power) but rectifies itself in a matter of seconds. It will also feel a bit hesitant/hunting but this doesn't last long either.

Once its up to temperature the car starts and drives perfectly but if i stop and let it idle and then blip the throttle it sometimes cuts out.

My garage has so far replaced the battery and cleaned the fuel filter, they said the next step will be to replace the fuel filter but asked me in the mean time to put a few tanks of good diesel through it (ive always used cheap supermarket stuff) with some fuel system cleaner so ive been running it on VPower today.

My garage thinks that if the cleaner and new fuel dont solve it then they need to start looking at the high pressure pump which is mega bucks.

Im hoping other owners out there have experienced similar symptoms and may be able to help me with things to try other than the pump.

I would have presumed they would have changed the fuel filter not cleaned it. Have they read the fault codes to see if they point to anything?

Similar problems...

Hi,

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I have a very similar problem, besides my D3 does not start. I will only get the first fire-up and then it dies...

I did a change of water pump, otherwise nothing besides standing still for about 4 weeks in cold weather.
FBH does not start either so I suspect there is some issues with getting fuel.
How can this be verified?
I checked the fuel pump relay and it looks ok.

It's bit hard to describe, the engine turns over, and get's the initial ignition, just like it's going to start but that's it.
It will keep doing this even if I try several times...

I have charged the battery which I also replaced last year.

When you say its getting the initial ignition is it actually firing up and running briefly then dying or turning over but not firing up, then perhaps the glow plugs, the only other element involved is the fuel. You say its been standing for 4 weeks in the cold so possibly the fuel is bad, frozen or there's water/condensation in the tank.

Im no expert and sure someone with mechanical knowledge will be along soon to help.

Thought I'd give you an update on the problem.

I took the D3 back to the garage and they did a full service (which it needed anyway), replaced the fuel filter and cleaned through any pipes once the filter was off.

There was was no change for at least 4 days then it started to improve, starting first time from cold and idling better. A further 2 days and it appears to now be fixed, even from a cold morning start it fires up and idles perfectly and does not die no matter how much I blip the throttle.

I must mention however, and this could be pure coincidence, the outside temperature had risen from just below freezing to just above freezing during the time after the garage did the last lot of work.
