Can the Fan blades be separated from the viscous coupling?
Hi all
My water pump came off on my D4, one of the bolts had fallen out and the others then sheared. As it flew across the engine bay it damaged the fan blades. Sods law meant my wife had to be driving so she got a bit of a shock as the coolant light came on and she lost the power steering on a dual carriageway.
The fan unit is still usable if a little bruised, I have replaced the water pump and the car is running fine, but I wanted to know whether I could separate the viscous unit from the plastic fan blades, it looks like it is just bolted between 2 plates.
I have an old one off a D3 which looks identical although the whole assembly has a different part number on the D3 to the D4. I want to swap over the plastic blades and keep the newer viscous unit, but could just use the old D3 one if it is compatible? (D3 one has done 130K miles, D4 unit only 54K miles.)
Also does anyone have a part number so the fan blades be bought separate to the viscous coupling unit?

D3 to D4 cooling fan differences
I answered my own question, but had to take the fan off the car to find out.
The fan comes off the viscous coupling just by undoing the 4 bolts once the whole assembly is off.
The bolt holes on the fan are at a different radius on the D4 compared to the D3. The D4 has locating lugs on the viscous coupling just above the bolt holes as well.
Thought I would share in case this helps someone else in the future.
