Coming home on new year going through extremely thick fog the fog lights didn't work, went home and found the fuse had blown! Replaced the fuse, they worked twice and the fuse has gone again! Any ideas?? Want to stay away for Stealers as much as possible! Very dirty 1996 Defender 90 - Soon to be mine!

I had the same problem the other day, take out the fog light, on mine it was the near side, the plastic front just pulls off from the top then there are three torx screws remove the light unit and the live wire may have rubbed through and could be shorting out, just tape it up with electric tape and just get duck tape and stick it on the metal its been rubbing on just to stop it doing it again, it all good on mine now, should work for you!

It's a common fault, has happened to mine and many others:
dunton10 wrote:Due to recent weather condtions have been using front fog lights for first time. After 30 mins use I lost both lights. Suspected blown fuse which was confirmed next day ( when light) but upon changing fuse it went immediately again. Not wishing to take the car back to dealers straight away for such a small fault I thought I'd take a look, and I removed both front fog lights.
Immediately noticed that the wiring insulation was worn through and that the wire was shorting out on the metal visible through the fog light aperture. only part of the wiring was wrapped in insulation. Car has only covered 1500 miles so i was surprised that it had worn through so quickly. perhaps the wiring loom was damaged when fitted.
Anyway, I retaped the wires with insulation tape and replaced fuse (again) and all is now well. Only took 15 minutes.
Thought I'd share this in case others are experiencing problems and thinking that problem is more serious than it is.Suppose now they are working we will not see any fog again for months.
Also ... don't forget to stick something over the piece of metal on the bumper that causes the problem - some gaffer tape or sticky-back pad or similar - or it will happen again!

Check my gallery.
LHS wiring loom wears through on sharp chassis member. Bit of icky tape sorts it sooner than driving to a d r.

Amidst all my other current woes (see http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic16749.html ), I had forgotten that I had noticed that my foglights aren't working either. Since I suspect that my other problems are electrics related, maybe the foglights/starting/suspension are all part of the same mess.

As this is such a common problem shouldn't we have a 'sticky' post somewhere for this ?

I noticed my front fogs had failed recently. I didn't investigate because I never use them and it is due for a service next week. I now know what to tell the dealers to look for ! Good info.
