You can actually gauge how much dirty oil comes out
I've measured and marked my waste containers so I can see how much dirty oil comes out if say oil goes clean after 8 ltrs I know it's short if it goes clean after 11 ltrs I know it's over filled so I can do the appropriate changes

gearbox
intresting comments below the vid-re dislodging deposits and ruining boxes...
being both a facelift x5 and disco 3 auto owner i would hate to have this done and have to replace both boxes
in practice i will probably touch neither-x5 101k,disco 132k
looks a good service though all the same

When you flush the gearbox through the oil cooler all you are doing is capturing the old oil as it circulates and replacing with new, if the deposits that you are worried about are on the move during a flush they were on the move anyway. The Torque Converter is doing the pumping out so is doing nothing more than it's normal function.
In general terms a box that fails after any sort of oil change is a box that was failing anyway, it is common in the trade to see vehicles booked in for a gearbox oil change because of a problem not as a service job.Paul Redding

flush
there are lots of ideals concerning it-and a very valid point made about any debris likely to come loose will do so anyway,-a school of thought on bimmer forums is to have it done earlyish in the cars life before any accumalation etc and repeat at reasonable intervals
the change on the disco is slightly better than the x5 for some reason,as was the change on previous td6 vogue[53 reg] even though the x5 is a year younger and 30k less miles than the landie
not that there is anything really wrong with the x5-just the landrover products are smoother
