Instrument cluster problem |
|
Hi guys, I really need some help. My last contribution to this site had the response of welcome to an expensive club or words to that effect. Well it’s proved to be, 6k this year alone and 14k over the last 2 years. So, my current issue which the dealer can’t find is the above. The problem started with the trip computer screen freezing and the clock part show black chequers. I have since had various problems with this and I have had the dials zero and come back straight away while on the motorway. It returned from the dealer today who could not find a fault code and had no experience of this fault. Sod’s law would have it that 2 hours after leaving the dealer today the fault occurred 4/5 times in 500 yards. This time however the the dials zeroed and returned to normal with the exception of of the fuel gauge where the fuel light came on and stayed on until the gauge showed the correct reading. The current position is the computer screen is blank with dials working. So, any ideas guys?

Have you got a diagnostic code reader? It sounds like a kaput instrument binnacle but you really do need diagnostic codes if we are to offer you any meaningful analysis of the problem!

Thank you for your reply. No I don’t have a code reader. It was with the dealer all day and no fault codes showed up, which is the problem.

Hey Safehands, mine did this from the moment I picked it up 2 years ago. It was briefly better during last summer following a new battery and alternator but the ultimate fix for me was an instrument cluster refurb. I suspect you're going to get no joy looking for fault codes. Mine never logged anything significant beyond some communication errors, but they are very much par for the course in a D3.
There are a couple of places that do refurbs but it usually involves stripping it out and posting it off. Expect to be without it for up to a week. If you know what you're looking for - which is presumably dry joints on the PCB - you could have a go yourself at your own risk, but I didn't fancy it.
Here are a couple of threads on the subject of other folk having cluster issues:
https://disco3.co.uk/forum/help-instrument-cluster-156842.html
https://disco3.co.uk/forum/instrument-cluster-failure-153185.html
There are some sketchy reviews out there of the guys I used but I caught them on an OK week, although their timescales are ambitious and their communications can be a bit tetchy if you catch them at the wrong time.
I'm now 8 months post refurb and the cluster has been perfect ever since. ***GONE*** 2007 XS Manual in Wet Weekend (Stornoway Grey) ***GONE***

Thank you for the feed back. I thought that would be the case re fault codes because the dealer could not register any. I can’t be without the car and I know the dealer can fit one for £1200, although they did not seem to think it was worth while until it happens again. Not sure I like that idea when one fault seems to cause another fault to appear on these cars. Been out today and everything is normal.

Just noticed you are in Essex and so are the Cluster Repairs UK guys (Waltham Abbey). They will do repairs on site by appointment, so maybe worth a chat with them given the price difference. They charged me less than £300.
Having said that, always be wary of their estimated timescales. ***GONE*** 2007 XS Manual in Wet Weekend (Stornoway Grey) ***GONE***

The other people to try are BBAreman in Rochester in Kent. Have not heard any bad stories about them and they have been around for quite a few years. 2006 TdV6 HSE.

Hi safehands.
I've got exactly the same problem with mine, and as you, no specific fault codes.
After taking the cluster out and cleaning the plug. I put a new battery earth strap on, and cleaned the plugs on the module at the rear of the battery.
None of this has made any difference unfortunately.
So with the mixed reviews and the time frame for repair I decided to have a new one fitted .
It's going in next week. The garage I'm using has quoted £603 + vat for the cluster and one hrs labour to fit. Still a lot but nothing like your main dealer quote.
