Spare key fob-forgetful Discovery?
My spare key fob has sat unused for years, I went to use it recently and of course it didn't work. So I changed the battery in the fob, expecting it to spring into life... nothing at all, can't even start the engine. So sent it off to a specialist who checked it and said it was working perfectly, he said that the car thinks the remote has been lost and forgets it. Will it need pairing again at a dealer? The other remote works perfectly.

Hi Stiarno
You can drop into a dealer to recode or do it yourself, some of the diagnostic kits will code a key, cheapest we’ve found is the Autel, around £50, decent code reader but will let you code your own key.

Thanks for that. I do have an icarsoft cr pro which has been invaluable, but unless I'm missing something, won't program the key. Still can't believe the fob won't work, if it's putting out the right signal, then you'd think it would work??

Morning, if you sent the key off to be checked then they could
Only check that it was transmitting “something” what it’s sending just isn’t being recognised as valid by the car. Looks like if the battery has been flat for Long enough it just forgot 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

Would the key being reminded if it’s old codes count, in the key’s mind, as being reprogrammed? After all if it’s forgotten what it knew then it doesn’t know if reminding it is new data or same old same old. And they don’t like being reprogrammed.
I have two keys for my D4 & for my SL350, and once a month a religiously swap them over so that no key is left unused for more than a month.
We were all advised to do this, by someone here many years ago.

Good advise NJSS, although it comes with caveats. My spare key is set up for SWMBO to use (seat forward/higher, mirrors etc) as the disco is the “family” car and she can drive it whenever she wants, so there are some benefits to the spare key stopping working 2008 HSE Stornoway Grey

You know what you have to do, it’s as obvious as the long nose on a Blackpool donkey. You take the hit for the team and reprogram both keys to MrsK’s settings, swap them monthly, then you just press the buttons as require. It’s a winner, winner, at least you get dinner without cooking it yourself, and as a fringe benefit the unused switches get a workout.
Sorted.

The joke of it is that when I took out the old battery, it was still ok, so my Discovery 'forgot' a perfectly legitimate working remote, just because it hadn't been used for a long time. All very frustrating.
