Copper or threadlock to underbody tray bolts? |
|
Doing fuel and oil filters.
Noticed bolts to the gearbox cover tray were all a bit loose from when I had a gearbox flush a couple months back.
Put copper grease on them to stop from seizing like they had when we did the flush, but they clearly loosed of markedly with just routine running.
So, copper grease still, or threadlock?
And, I couldn’t find a torque value ..... any ideas?

IMHO, threadlock should be ok as, although it does what it says on the tin, it will prevent corrosion (rust) by keeping oxygen away from the threads. so whilst the bolts won't shake loose they won't rust into place either.

Unless you are a running a Lister diesel, once tightened they should stay tight forever regardless of what you put on the threads.

Thanks!
Went with just torquing them up.
But, having got the trays back on went the route of turning the ignition to II several times to clear the air.
Went to start the car and delightfully started first fire!
‘Yes!’ I thought.
Then the engine died.
‘ ’ I thought,
Tried to start again, and nope. Just turned over and over.
‘ , my wife is going to kill me’ I thought.
Had I misconnected the fuel filter? No way to check, I’d put the bloody plates back on.
Went back to basics and checked the low pressure fuel system bleed point, and out came diesel ...... for a bit anyway.
Cycled the ignition to II and more came out so likely filter ok?
Bit of a blast of air, then fuel again.
Tried to start once more, kicked over for about 10 seconds, then reluctantly lumbered to life.
Ran the engine for a few mins, then switched of only to hear a noise sounding like a tapper type metallic then a gasping, like air was rushing in or out of something under pressure.
Hmmm, not heard that before.
Left it a few minutes, and checked the oil level; needed another 700 mls, then started again. First time, but again the the wheezing sound on stopping.
Cleared everything away, checked fault codes, and nothing, so started up and went for a drive. Seems more responsive, which I am hoping is the new fuel filter .... only one was corroded and ‘jaguar’ badged rather than ‘FoMoCo’, making me think it’s not been done in a long long time.
Will see what happens, but I can’t shake the feeling I something up!

Remarkably, my MPG has gone rpm 24.4 up to 27.5!
Unexpected result.
Or, could be the tdv6 death song ..... everything seems to run better right before the engine fails catastrophically!
