Rear propshaft bearing replacement

A few months ago I implemented the sikaflex repair to the support bearing on the rear propshaft, in doing so I was left was a loud droning when coming off the throttle. It appears the bearing had worn itself into groove when the rubber had collapsed, straightening out the prop with the sikaflex had induced lots of noise from this bearing. Last night I braved then sub zero temperatures to lay underneath the car and remove the prop, brought it into the kitchen to repair. A few notes when replacing:

1. When removing sealing cone, work round slowly and avoid too much distortion, it will make it much easier to get a good seal upon reassembly.

2. Rear section of prop needs to be at approx 60 degrees to the front section before slowly separating.

3. I didn't bother marking any parts, there apppear to be only 2 possible reassembly possibilities.

4. After cleaning inspect for damage, my 120k mile joint looked like new.

5. Taking the old bearing off was easier when I'd removed all but the inner face.

6. For reassembly you need to examine the inner 'rose' and the outer 'cage'. Between the bearing locations there are shaped surfaces. For correct reassembly the opposite shape on the rose and cage should be matched. Its hard to explain but very obvious when you inspect them. When adding bearings I found it easiest to add bearings opposite from each other.

7. Ensure circlip is fitted, add CV grease and push together.

8. Refit sealing cone and tap down ridge. Add a seam of sikaflex to keep a good seal.

I tried the CV joint in both the correct and incorrect formats. When wrong, as others have found the CV joint takes on superhuman ability to stay straight. All back on car now and 100 mile journey was lovely and quiet. As to long term reliability I'll wait and see but I cannot see any reason why it shouldn't last.

I fitted a new center bearing on a second hand prop and took me around 2 hrs to do. Have a donor spare if any one wants it for free. Worth a shot at £50 for a new bearing and 2 hrs of your time.

Centre bearing from cps drivelink. Used them before with my vws and quality seems good.

The new bearing looks the same as the one I took off, bearing is mrs (India) where as the original was tik (china). Given that it is almost a universal size and manufactured in there millions I don't think they'll be much difference.

Being a truck mechanic I've changed hundreds of centre bearing,so when my bearing rubber failed I went against advice about changing the prop and fitted a bearing
Fairly straight forward job
However about 2 weeks later the rear uj failed and I couldn't afford to take risks with it as my wife/kids use it every day while I'm away for work
So ended up fitting a prop anyway

Mikey the old props here withe new bearing on it if you want it(Alva)

I phoned them direct, was £62 inc the postage. You won't need any practice tbh, just make sure you have a sachet of cv grease ready to go.

Youngscottie, did the rear UJ seem dodgy at all when you changed the centre bearing? I've got a new rear UJ and front CV for the prop but decided against fitting because the orginals seemed in very good condition.

I know Alva well, grew up there (lived down in the Henry Boot houses opposite Cobelcrook), small world!

have just bought a new support bearing assembly as mine is shot.
Looking at the new one, thee bearing itself has no manufacturers name on it.
From previous experience with poor quality bearings on my Freelander TD4, I decided to replace the bearing with a reputable one so I bought a SKF 6006 2RS to replace it before fitting the unit.
