Removing inner tie rod ball socket help. |
|
I need to do the inner and outer tie rods, and really would like to have a go myself.
It all looks reasonably easy (have read all the guides on here), but I am still not sure how you undo the inner tie rod from the steering rack?
Looks like a ball and also a thread?
Any pointers would be great

Pair of stilsons on the tie rod and tap the stilsons with an hammer anti-clockwise to undo, opposite to refit. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Doing this tomorrow, both wheels of the deck or just the one being operated on at the time?
Also, assume uncouple outer from wheel carrier first then undo inner from rack?
Thanks in advance of xmas disaster

You can do the one, track rod end out first, slacken the locknut first and count the turns for reassembly, easy enough, as said above I just use stillsons for the inner track rod, won't take you long
* you should have alignment checked after but if you're careful you may not need it, you'll know by any obvious change in steering wheel position

Simple tracking check: level ground normal ride height steering straight ahead, measure the distance between the front of the front wheels before you start and check its the same when you have changed them It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks gents did the near side in about an hour today before it got dark. Going to do brake pads while its in bits and the tools are in the boot. Then I'll do the other side, the good news is that my quarter to three knock/clicking has gone so problem solved. Wonder if they'll notice if I slip out after xmas lunch tomorrow....
