Disco seems suffocated on startup, now wont start - help!
Seasons greetings all
I'm calling on the font of knowledge of all things disco ;
I've been having a problem with my 3 for a while now. For the first couple of minutes after startup the car will not rev up then gets better after holding the accelerator down for a while with the revs slowly building, then I can get on as normal. I thought this was maybe a turbo issue?
Now however, the car barely ticks over then gives up, this happened once a couple of weeks ago but I managed to tease it back into life. Now its not having it, just chugs a bit then dies, I'll give it another try in a bit.
Any Ideas? EGR valve?

Yes I do, the IID one recommended here. No relevant faults come up. I cleared them, tried starting again then scanned for faults again - nothing.

Just saw the fuel filter suggestion, sounds sensible, think I'll try changing that!
LP fuel pump - have a friend who had trouble with his on a freelander, a full tank of fuel made it run fine, mine already has a full tank so maybe probably no.
Did you or can you look at the live values on the EGRs on a run out
I had a similar issue last winter cos I have a couple of glow plugs out she would start up rough with no power but would rev freely in neutral
I had the management light come on so a kind member plugged his Id tool in and I did have a couple of EGR and MAF faults logged but the live values were spot on when we drove around through different driving scenarios
Never had it happen again though .
She did seem to have trouble picking up when the issue first came to light on cold mornings almost like fuel starvation as you describe
I had just put a new battery on so I kid myself it was a glitch

Thanks for the tip Phil, I assume you replaced the glow plugs and that cured it then?
I'll have a look, if I can get her going
No mate
Did the research and didn’t want to snap them so left them ,she always started but it got a lot better with the new battery to be honest
No probs this year apart from a splutter when it’s 0 or below
Good luck
Phil

At the top rear of the engine is a shrader valve(tyre valve) for bleeding the fuel system, if you have an old tyre pump air line connect it to the shrader valve, put the open end of the pipe into a clean container, turn the ignition on and you should have a solid flow of fuel coming out while the low pressure lift pump is running, you will be able to hear the pump running for about 20 seconds, ignition off on to repeat.
This will confirm if or not you have a problem upto that point including wrong fuel, blocked filter or pipe, faulty fuel pump.
A faulty turbo will not cause the engine not to start, only to not rev above 1800rpm. A failed or worn LP fuel pump will not throw a fault! It is possible for the engine to run once it has started with a faulty lift pump It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Would a sticking turbo linkage stop the engine starting?- not in my experience! It can when others can't,

Glow plugs not working will also cause the engine to flood like too much choke on a petrol car, this then takes a time to clear the excess fuel, have fitted an Altox controler on mine until I’m brave enough to temp the glow plugsDiscovery 3 HSE 07
