ODB II

Does the D3 use ODB II protocol?

Where does the plug sit where the tesbook gets connected?

Thanks.

OK I foundthe plug. It looks silmilar to the plug used by the D2 and Defenders.

Question:
1. Is it the same?
2. Does it use the same pinouts?

The reason why I ask:

http://ucables.com/ref/GS300-OBD2

Anyone using this tool?

The D3 uses CAN bus protocols. If you plug in an OBDII you get very little info. only for petrol engines. Big Cry I have been through all of that and I have a Faultmate at the moment. Have a look at www.blackbox-solutions.com It seems that there is a lot of software development still to come for the Faultmate D3 but it is still a handy device that can show errors and settings and reset errors. The problem seems to be that while the CAN bus is now a standard protocol in cars since 2005 the software in vehicles such as Landies and Jags is encrypted to prevent non dealer type people from working on them( a Ford approach probably Censored ). The people at Black Box Solutions(BBS) are working hard at accessing all the ECU's on the D3. My 'S' TdV6 has 13 ECU's and the HSE about 25. The 16 pin plug is on the underside of the panel below the steering wheel. regards

Hi Pierre, I have a handheld ODBII device that I bought from someone who found his Toyota Prado was not compatible. I get a whole series of status messages and sensor readouts and temperatures when the engine is running but no further into other ECU and fault codes, plugs straight in under bottom right of dash.

Thanks Ian. Looking for something that will be able to clear faults while in very remote areas.

Garry which model have you got? It seems the one in 2007 was made for the latest LR's including the new Defender.

I do not want a Testbook, but can see the benefits of being able to access fault codes, resetting them, and perhaps disabling the faulty bit if necessary.

I have the Faultmate SV(single vehicle) and only the software for the Disco 3. If you want to use it for other models such as Range Rover, RR Sport or MG etc you purchase the extra software from BBS. I have been told that the Land Rover Testbook costs AUS $30,000. Some after market people use the Autologic device which is also expensive. At the moment the Faultmate is the only one that can analyse the electronics in the Disco 3's at a reasonable price, the OBDII's won't do it at all Mr. Green

Not quite 30K, but probably the deciding factor for not getting a Testbook. Would opt for another Landy at that price. Laughing

With your Faultmate, can you clear the faults? What price did you pay, and did you buy it locally?

Thanks.

I got the Faultmate from Hardy at www.hardrange.com in QLD. At the time it was about AUS$2100. I believe from the BBS website they have a new model which might be cheaper, don't know the price. It can analyse the ECU's in the car and reset some. Some of the resets I have tried sometimes don't work but at other times do. If you buy the product you can login to the BBS Support and post your problems there. Because of the compexity of the Disco 3, BBS are still developing the software and regularly post upgrades on their site. It isn't fully developed yet but I won't go bush without it Very Happy

I was just taking a look at this site - http://www.talktomycar.co.uk/index.htm

Are none of the PC interfaces on there any use with the D3?

Has anyone got the Faultmate MSV http://www.blackbox-solutions.com/docs/faultmate_msv.pdf - their web site suggests it's only £149+vat which seems quite reasonable if it works!

Are there any alternatives? Confused Confused

I had Faultmate MSV briefly, despite the sales talk, in my experience it can't do anything useful beyond (sporadically) reading fault codes and clearing them Rolling Eyes
I'm now a VERY happy owner of an Autologic unit - works straight away and has many functions that LR dealers cannot access with IDS

The blackbox (closed) forum is littered with frustrated equipment owners and unanswered questions, I managed to get a full refund on my unit, from what I hear others have not been so 'lucky' Confused
No doubt I'll get a slagging shortly from BBS spy for having 'unrealistic expectations' and 'expecting such a complex combination of hardware & software to work straight away' Rolling Eyes

The issue with most of the PC interfaces is that they are not sufficiently fast enough to read data from high-speed CANBus, this is the protocol that most of the critical Disco3 systems use, there is a medium-speed CANBus for non - essential systems which most PC interfaces can read but by definition, these systems do not generally affect vehicle operation....

I got a reply from talktomycar.co.uk (odd name I know!) and they said

"The ELM327 pc interface has the CAN-Bus Protocol and works at 4 different speeds.

The ELM327 is autosensing and auto switching.

http://www.talktomycar.co.uk/products/interfaces/mj027a.htm"

When I asked if it's been tested with the D3 they replied..

"The ELM327 will work with all OBD2 compliant vehicles."

I suppose the question has to be - is 1 of the 4 speeds compatible with the high speed CAN-bus? TFC - what data rate does the D3 CAN-bus use? If I specify the rate to the ELM327 supplier they can confirm (or deny) it can communicate at that rate.
