Plastic plug on engine block side connecting to bell housing

When I was changing the clutch last month I noticed that there was a completely brittle and broken plastic plug thing covering some kind of window on the flywheel/bell housing from the engine block. I figures this should probably best not be exposed to the elements what with a new clutch fitted!

Does anyone know what I am describing? What is it, is it important and where can I find another and is it difficult to fit now its all back together?

Somewhere in the area you describe is the crankshaft position sensor which looks at the flywheel for positioning
