Smoking and Lack of Performance
Hello, hope this is in the right place... I've spent a fair bit of time reading the forum trying to find some pointers.
My Disco 3 2.7 is struggling to maintain speed on cruise control and needs to drop down a gear with lots of throttle to accelerate up a hill when on the motorway. There’s no smoke when driving normally, but when WOT there is delay and then acceleration with black smoke. Acceleration is still reasonably strong but not as good as previously.
So far I have removed and cleaned the MAP sensor. The EGR are blanked and I checked they were looking ok. Intercooler piping on offside removed and checked for leaks with nothing visible.
The following codes have come up from the reader:
P02AE Cylinder 6 Balance Fuel Trim at Maximum Limit
P121A Cylinder Balance – Injector Restricted
P0405 EGR Sensor A circuit low
P140A EGR Sensor C circuit low
P140D EGR Control Circuit B Range Performance
P132B Turbocharger boost control A performance
Any help or pointers in the right direction would be gratefully received. I’ve spent a fair bit of time trying to get to the bottom of it, and the garage I took it to spent 2 hours on it then said they can’t sort it and don’t know what’s wrong!

I’m sure a guru will give you pointers soon, you say you’ve checked the intercooler pipe and nothing visible personally I’d change it for £40ish and then seen. Do you have any warnings on the dash ? Check your air filter too. Is your turbo actuator sticking ? Can you hear it moving when the key is switched on then off plenty stuff on here to tell you how to checkMetal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes, pads, callipers, flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

Intercooler pipe may look ok, but liner may be collapsing internally when under vacuum. Been there.

Cylinder balances look ok.
Ignore EGR codes as you've blanked them.
I'm not sure what the injector codes mean.
P132B is generally turbo related, either sticking actuator rod or actuator problem itself but i would have thought 'Engine system fault' would have appeared on the dash at some point.
Clear the fault codes and see what comes back after a couple of days.Stu

Definitely try the turbo actuator rod although the smoke suggests a leak, if it's not one of the intercooler pipes then suspect the intercooler could be split, look for oil staining on front faceMark

Hi
I had issues like this and found it was a sticky actuator along with a broken clip on the small intercooler hose
There’s also the other intercooler clips that are hidden behind the passenger side wheel arch liner
If u do remove the liner , whilst it’s out check the small fuel line connector that goes to the FBH , know u haven’t got an issue with that, but worth checking with the liner out
Included an offset test when I done mine
Another job with that liner out is the 3 x connector blocks that go to the air compressor

Gentlemen thank you very much!
Can't believe I spent so long checking all the piping intercooler etc when it was the turbo actuator. Totally stuck solid. A couple of hours after work last night and all is back to how it should be.
Feels good to be able to pull away from slip roads again. Haha
All codes bar the egr are gone as well now.
Is there anything I should do to keep it moving freely?
Thanks again for the input

Hi
Great u got it fixed, mines also a 2005 and it didn’t have the turbo actuator software that motors the arm back and forth when the ign is turned on and off
Start the engine , then after a few minutes turn it off, u should hear the arm moving
If not get in touch with pat at Gap , he will ask u to send over ur ecu info from the gap tool
If it’s not there it cost £25 from the fast lane service to add the turbo actuator software
When I checked around those short turbo hoses I noticed some oil, which highlighted that one if the clips were broke
Plus have u had the engine remapped as I know u have to be careful with re flashing ecus , due to the risk of being over written
Some of the more experience members should be able to confirm that for u
Hope that helps

Now that it's been freed up its cycling open and closed on ignition so it seems ok now.
Surprising that yours doesn't as mine is a very early one registered in late 2004. Hopefully it'll be ok for a good while. At least I know the symptoms and it's quick to free up now I've done it once.
