Paint mismatch
Hi all,
I have a 59 plate D4 in Stornoway Grey and I want to replace the front offside plastic wheel arch trim, I bought a new piece of trim along with grey plastic primer, and a can of genuine touch up paint in Stornoway grey, but when I’ve come to fit the piece the grey seems a lot more silvery than the original colour.
So is there a variation of the grey specially for plastics?
Thanks

Don't forget the original paint on the car is 10 (or more) years old, and you've only painted a small piece.
A body shop would want to paint the wing, and blend it out into the door as well.
If it doesn't look too bad, you've done well already!Richard

If you go to a professional body shop they have many test cards for the same paint code. I had to have a new wing fitted to my old car and couldn’t leave it at the body shop to be done so I drove the car there, they matched one of the 10 or so variations of Panther black to my car and painted it with out the car.
I would not be surprised if the touch up paint is just in the middle of the variations to match with as many cars as possible.
Another issue is if it’s metallic, if you imagine the metallic particles are glitter held in suspension in the paint, it can sink to the bottom so it needs a vigorous shake of the can to mix it evenly. Next you have to work out how thick the coats are. One thick coat will allow the particles to sit upright and allow the light to reflect off the particle face in all directions. A thin coat only allows the particles to sit relatively flat only allowing the light to reflect back away from the vehicle surface. This gives the appearance of being lighter and silvery. A thick coat with upright particles allows more light to pass the particles and hit the base colour giving it a deeper colour and sparkly effect.012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

One mark on my first D3 door when I was 4 months old ended up with the whole side of the car being repainted. Light colours seem to be the worst.
