Bloody hell.

When I skimmed the original post I thought it was from a troll or something. Then I noticed the email address. I can assure everyone that Dan is at least a real person although he had a jaguar.com email address the last time I spoke to him. I'll send you an email tomorrow Dan.

FYI Dan, since we last met a few years ago (when I was demoing our calibration software), I've moved from Cambridge and am now living in Detroit, working as Product Design Director for the same company Thumbs Up And yes, despite having first hand experience of the JLR electronics department I did buy a Land Rover Whistle Two in fact!

p.s. we've got some great new products in the pipeline... Wink

My comments on the D3 traction control and TR system (which I pm'd to the writer of the Aussie version of this thread):

1. the DSC (when deactivated by the driver) should stay deactivated when switching the TR between sand, mud or rock setttings. When traversing rough ground and the need to switch TR settings comes up, it's often too distracting to find the DSC button and deactivate it. In fact, the button should probably be near the TR dial (perhaps in the centre of it), not on the dash.

2. in 'rock', lock the diffs in advance. This might be problematic at speeds higher than a few kph, so a better option would be ....

3. have an "emergency" setting that locks the diffs and raises the car to extended profile. You could speed-limit this mode to say 15kph (see below for related suspension suggestions).

3. there should be an option to have HDC only come on at the driver's discretion.

Some more related to the air suspension:

1. as everyone in Oz is saying, up the max speed for off-road height. You could impliment this only for TR 'off' or TR 'sand' to preserve CVs etc in rougher stuff.

2. when the car is in extended mode, whether this is due to the ESM raising it or the user raising it (if you provide an 'emergency' setting as per above), it should only be speed limited, not time limited. I often have to drive down mining tracks, where after a wash-out, the centre of the track is too high for off-road height (our Toyota work vehicles are all raised by 3"). My solution at the moment requires me to 'trick' the car into extended profile (by lowering it onto the jack), and then proceeding slowly down the track. Unfortunately, after 45s or so, the car automatically returns to off-road height, scraping the crap out of the bottom of the car (and sometimes leaving me stranded on a rock) before it realises that it needs to return to extended profile again. When this happened to me last year, the car lowered itself onto a rock that subsequently broke the air compressor mounting and unplugged the wiring harness. So ....

3. protection plate for the air compressor as an option.

Other than these annoying points, the TR works remarkably well. Giving the user the option to make some of the systems pro-active (such as my suggestion on the 'emergency' setting) would make it even better.

Cheers,

Gordon

I think the TR system is excellent. I have a a couple of suggestions;

1. Its easy to set a TR mode, you generally have the time to think about it, however, when you have reached the end of a lane (trail), I think a quick cancel option would be useful. This would quickly set the car up for normal road use with a prefferably a single operation.

2. An additional Economy mode would be good, perhaps it could alter the engine and gearbox to give the most economical settings and reduced performance.

3. A proper Sport Mode to go with the above, would set the engine and gearbox for maximum performance.

The Terrain Response knob could also utilise a Push & Pull feature to allow for any of the additional programmes as suggested in the above replies.
ie. Economy Mode - Push down.
Raise Off Road Speed Limiter - Pull out

I think terrain response is excellent - have only really used the snow setting but enjoyed experiencing the difference between having it switched on, and switched off. Don't want to double up on previous posts - but I'd be keen to know exactly what was happening mechanically at each setting.

I would prefer it if the Terrain Response knob (and the suspension, and transfer box buttons) were set further forward - in front of the gear stick where the transfer lever was on the old D2. I'd prefer the visibility you would have of everything if it were in that position. I don't need to look at the buttons when moving them - and I can see the setting on the dash - but it would seem to make more sense.

The space saved by moving the buttons could then be used as additional storage...

...or a manual handbrake? Whistle

As an outback traveller I'd make the following suggestions.
In sand/grass mode the 50kph offroad suspension height be raised substantually. As others have commented the new L200 will get a free leg up against the D3 (and RRS).
View my gallery to view the damage to exhausts etc on my recent outback and desert trip.
I am general agreeance with the other Oz members on the other issues. but the suspension height is my real MAJOR issue. The other possible improvement would the ability to selectively stiffen the suspension when driving on gravel roads with dips, the D3 bottoms out.
The rest I can work around.

ORC1 ....better still if you can influence the designer of the EPB to come on here Neutral We won't tie him up for long Whistle Wink

I think that the TR system is great , but would echo many of the comments already made. I would add that the DSC is never totally off even if the 'off 'switch has been selected and this can be a real pain in certain circumstances. We are not all litigious americans Wink ...so please...if the button says 'off' ..can it mean 'off' Thumbs Up

A high crown road /track setting. Which would enable travel at speeds greater than 50kph at off road height (like 80kph). Also could be used for crossing sand dunes where speed is required with off road height clearance.

All in all I love TR. It took a bit of getting used to, at first couple of goes, but I love it now. Bow down

Utah view of TR

I agree with others that the off-road height should be maintainable at higher speeds than currently possible. I often encounter stretches of desert two track where higher speeds are possible but high clearance is still required to navigate ruts and protect the underbelly. Having to constantly raise the vehicle on approach to frequent washes, where slower speed and higher clearance are required is annoying. Also, while it may have been driver error on my part, I recently had difficulty attempting to rock myself out of a near stuck situation in snow. From the grass, gravel, snow TR setting, I could not rock forward and back. Wheels refused to spin and traction control prevented me from establishing any rocking momentum forward or back to break out. I had to switch off all TR programs as well as the DSC to ultimately get out. Perhaps this is how it's all supposed to work, but it was frustrating and nearly got me hopelessly stuck when all the technology was seemingly working to prevent me from rocking the truck out of trouble. Thanks for asking. You're building a great truck. Hope the unfortunate sale of the company by Ford does LR no harm.
