| Terrain Response - what do you think? |
|
Hi all,
I work in the Land Rover Off Road Capability team based at the design centre at Gaydon, Warwickshire, England. I'm currently doing a "real" customer based study into usage of the Terrain Response (TR) system so it would be great to get your comments, particularly anything you really like or hate about TR and any suggestions for improving TR.
You can always email me directly (ddennehy@ford.com) or send me a private message if you'd rather not put up a post
Thanks in advance
Dan

We are not worthy.......
Well, OK, I suppose we (collective) are probably one of the best sources for a 'real' consumer study into TR on the D3.....
Can you give us a pointer as to what exactly you want to know or establish other than getting comments like "It's good" or "never use it myself" The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

Great Idea, but definately needs some guidence for people to give feedback, otherwise you'll be open to millions of answers which may be the same but put accross in another manner (if that makes sense!) Stornoway Discovery 3 XS Auto

To add my thoughts, I think TR is a great addition to the vehicle, easy to use and intuitive.
I would like to see the following added,
1. An 'Economy' setting as being rumoured for the LRX
2. A Diff-Lock mode that fully locked the centre and rear diffs for very tricky manoeuvres TDV6 HSE Auto - Arctic Frost

Excellant news to see someone from LR using the forum to improve design. Why not come along to one of the events and get first hand info
Re your question :- acouple of key things really,
1) I would prefer it if HDC wasnt switched on everytime a TR setting was selected and
2) a much more technical understanding of what each setting does.
Weve just spent the week doing the Croisere Blanche and despite being in snow for most of the week, I used every setting except snow setting If i understood more about "what" the settings did, then i possibly wouldnt have had to be towed out of a snowdrift by a landcruiser (although that was partly due to my excess speed in an attempt to kill Bodsy !!) Hi Dan and thanks for popping in
One useful feature would be that if I disable DSC in any of the three 'off-road' modes, then it would not automatically re-enable itself every time I selected another mode.
This obviously shouldn't apply to the Normal or Snow/Ice/Gravel settings, but if I am in Mud Ruts, disable DSC and I change over to Rock Crawl for a particularly difficult (but drier) section the DSC will automatically kick back in, thus driving me mad.....
As I said, I fully agree that selecting Normal or Slippery mode should re-enable DSC immediately.
Just a suggestion. 2006 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Good idea Dunc,
I always have to do a mental 'checklist' off what will happen to the car's configuration (diffs, TC, throttle response etc) whenever I face a really tricky piece of ground and want to select a TR mode. 2006 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Terrain Response is spooky magic and I LOVE IT
I'm sure martin the forums owner would be delighted to set up a survey here in order to help you guys out. If any drivers of D3's are required to come and see you guys for some hands on testing and feedback - count me in
Thanks for starting this thread.

Terrain Response + EPB use =
Hope you can accomodate the variety of responses Dan, without some of the vital messages getting obscured in the sifting phase.
Oh and if you need help, as Simon, says, i live closer to Gaydon than he does

ORC1, How about coming out on the Salisbury trip first weekend in March? Lots and lots of us will be there where this could be discussed over a beer (or several) and you could come out with us on one or both of the days, Land Rover will pay the OT won't they?
I have a spare front passenger seat... If you are annoying me, just remember it takes 42 muscles for me to frown and only 4 to extend my middle finger, and I'm lazy so don't be offended.

ORC1 (Dan),
But...
Please ask about what things really need a rethink on the D3.
Some things to begin with:
1. EPB is unreliable and not fit for purpose. It is more complex than a handbrake should be. A transmission brake might be a better idea that is not electronic.
2. How can a we overide a failed compressor on the air suspension.
3. The 40-50kph limit for off-road height does not suit Australian consitions.
Also have a look at the page on "Issues" that will give you a good insight into trouble spots.

Terrain Response is an excellent system and a good selling point for LR.
But.........................
1) Off road height to at least 80kmh. (a must for Australian and SA conditions) LR will not be able to compete with the LC200 for this one reason.
2) Agree, hill decent control does not need to come on automatically. Getting there is half the fun

Hi Dan - thanks for your interest in this site and its users. Whatever feedback you get I believe it is based on realworld use. The things that some owners achieve with their D3/LR3s must make the LR design team feel pretty smug and content with their efforts.
But back to TR...
I appreciate the simplicity with which it achieves the goals for most conditions. As an Aussie that drives on outback roads and occasionally in sandy conditions, I can only stress that the off road height maximum speed 40 kmh is very limiting. Maybe 60 kmh is more realistic without putting the driver at risk of overturning.
I agree that an Economy mode would be a great feature in these times of concern for the limited resources that this Earth has. (Until alternatives are proven to be suitable AND economical.) Maybe a simple Eco/Norm button on the top of the TR dial that lit green when in Eco mode?
A more technical description of each mode would not go astray in the manual or as a download from the technical reference site. Many users have vast experience with 4WDs in all forms and would happily like to choose a mode by knowing what individual electromechanical gizmos were kicking in when they chose that particular mode.
And if any of the changes can be incorporated, don't wait until a a future model; make it a software update for the next service. After all, you have the technology at your fingertips...
