Engine Warning Light Amber MY07 TDV6 auto
Hi all, today the amber engine warning light came on (car has done approx. 18k miles), some proper journeys, mostly short trips.
It's booked in for next week for the brake recall, the dealer advised that, provided the light stays amber it should be ok. Any thoughts on a possible cause? I will cover a couple of hundred miles before the dealer gets to it and don't want to get stranded on the M25 in the roadworks!
The manual refers to the light being for petrol versions only???
Many thanks for looking

Sam, was a broken EGR when mine came on. Dealer advised was OK to drive on this for a couple of weeks and then replaced one EGR when it went in. Yes the manual is a tad ambiguous in its descriptiojn on this I thought too!

DSL and Jonnyboy, many thanks for your replies. You have allayed my fears, so we're fine to use it and it shouldn't stop. I haven't noticed smoke from the exhaust, although I have noticed the pre-heater under the bonnet being quite smelly recently. I thought this was just the cold weather (may it is and is not linked to the EGR?). I'll keep a watch in the rear view mirror.
thanks again

Must be due. Mine MY07 too went amber a couple of weeks ago too. It was EGR (frighteningly I have been on this forum long enough to guess the cause) Anyway it was already booked in for the recall (three days later) so I phone the dealer and asked that this problem was cured at the same time. "No problem sir etc etc", so imagine how p ed off I was when I collected the car at the end of the day to be told that they had diagnosed the problem and it would have to be booked in to be sorted on another day! ALTERNATIVES...............No alternatives for off-road capability.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice. The engine warning light was the EGR as you said. They also did the brake recall and changed the servo aswell as oil had leaked there apparently. The car has only done 20k miles. They also changed the front near side ball joint all under warranty. Hunters Guildford, the first time I've used them, but I was impressed. They seem to be a good outfit.
All the best

Just going through this problem myself. MIL light is intermittent, some days on, some days of. Fault codes P045C, P045E point to EGR valve sticking. No noticeable loss of power or black smoke.

Just had this one done myself under warranty, had the EGR valve replaced and the EGR cooler?? replaced, LR assist blanked off the valve with a bean tin to ensure it worked ok as a short term fix, given enough time they might even be able to sort out my low coolant problem!! I'm pretty sure the EGR valve is actually an assembly with a valve and a separate cooler unit. This uses a heat exchanger type of thingy with the engine cooling system used to cool down the exhaust gases before they enter the valve and head on up to the inlets behind the butterfly valve.
I think it's a known fault (although not as common as a sticking valve) that these coolers/heat exchangers sometimes fail and cause a loss of coolant (and maybe system pressure?) and coolant warning messages on the dash.
It sounds like both the valve and the cooler failed on yours2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Second EGR?
3 weeks later and the engine light came back on again. Apparently the 2nd EGR for the other side had gone. Garage replaced it, they expected it to go but couldn't change it under warranty until it had actually failed!
My D3 finally succumbed to the engine warning light coming on after starting. Engine shows lack of power which makes me suspect that you guys are correct and its the EGR's - never liked EGR's took them off my Td5 90's and improved the mpg. Not sure if you can take the EGR's off an 08 plated D3. Car has only done 45K miles - not good. Heading off to my mechanic for a quick fix?
Worst case scenario is that the car will go into limp home mode before I get there!Mike

My EML light has been on sine Jan 2011. No noticeable loss of power or alteration to MPG. I did try to get the system blanked but I have 56 plate car with a Euro 7 engine so the blanking option wont work. Can bear to spend £350 to fix it when I cant feel any performance loss.D3 HSE, Stornoway grey, 2007 MY, side steps, privacy glass, door protection strips.
