Fly wheel seal?

Hi all, I’ve been tracking down an oil leak on my D3 over the last few weeks. It’s only minor, enough to start a drip on the sump shield bolt after about 3 weeks. I cleaned everything as best as possible a couple of weeks ago and drove as normal, got under yesterday and it looks that it may be seeping from the bottom of the bell housing of the fly wheel (just forward of the sump) guessing there’s a seal there but is there oil in the fly wheel? Thought it was dry?

Not an urgent thing, haven’t seen any appreciable drop in oil level on the dip stick for months, it’s just that if I don’t drop the sump guard and clean once a month it starts to decorate the drive Smile

Any ideas?

There's no oil in the fly wheel Kevin but there is ATF in the attached torque converter. A very different colour to the black engine oil, it should be translucent on your finger, and smell different too.

If it's engine oil, dense black, it could be the rear crank seal although it's not a common failure so perhaps widening your search elsewhere for now might reveal something.
I'd be looking further up the back of the engine to see if there's anything dripping from above.
A common enough culprit is the brake vacuum pump seal!

Or, possibly the oil cooler beneath the oil filter? to see if there is a leak there prod something long into the Vee between the cylinder banks and see if there's any oil sitting there. The crankcase breather/ oil separator might also have sprung a leak itself, or the rubber elbow on the rear metal pipe from the turbo.

I can't think of anything else just now, but I'm sure you have enough to keep your investigation powers sharpened for another bit. Thumbs Up

Rear main seal or if your lucky just the oil cooler as PG said, could also be a cam seal (lh side) or possibly valve cover leaking.
