Tailgate randomly opening without button being pressed... |
|
So the other day I thought I mistakenly reprogrammed the 3rd button to open the tailgate, then pressed it by mistake while locking the disco. I thought this because I hadn’t been round to the boot and when I went to lock it I got the bib of the horn to say a door was open. It was the tailgate. Reprogrammed the key to follow me home lights and carried on and forgot about it. That’s was until today.....
Went to the passenger side front door, unlocked, opened then shut the door, locked it, “bib”, opened and shut the door harder, locked, “BIB”. After searching all possibilities it was the tailgate. But I didn’t press the 3rd button and when I checked, pressed the 3rd button I got the follow me home lights not the tailgate open. So not the key! Seemed to pop open before I tried lock it again, “BIB”. So I opened all the doors and the tailgate, made sure they were shut properly and it locked ok. But the the boot popped, I could hear the mechanism trying to open again randomly even when the tailgate was fully open!!!! Finally got it to stay shut and locked.
When I left work and opened the tailgate the latch was going nuts again!!!!
When it “pops” open, it’s still latched but slightly ajar, so you can’t open it when locked.
Is this common?
Is there a fix?

Have you lubricated the catch ? The bonnet catches have a habit of doing that and i find a clean and lubricate seems to cure it MY18 RRS Autobiography Fuji White

I have not, I will give it a go.
I assume I should use something like white grease?

I had this with our old D3. I thought it was a fault with the boot handle itself.
With hindsight, I suspect it was actually a side effect of blocked sunroof drains. The water collects in the channel in the passenger side floor, where the wiring looms run, and I believe can cause ghost boot openings.
Worth checking you haven’t got water in the footwells to rule it out. Cheers,
Gareth

Had the same problem with mine. The switch in the handle sticks, if you do a forum search you will find that a replacement from a Ford something (may be Escort?) is identical and a lot cheaper than the LR part.

I replaced the button in the handle too - it wasn't that! Although it was a cheap swap with a Ford part (from a Focus I believe - Escort too old) and easy to do, it didn't make any difference for ours.
Please do check the wiring channel running along the passenger side just in from the sill trim. Cheers,
Gareth
