Looking for advise (as a newbie) on the best roof racks.
Only real stipulation is that it must be capable of attaching a roof rack directly to it

He needs an Expo rack! A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

I was thinking roof rack, but if the roof bars are straight, (unlike the D2) then that could be a cheaper alternative

Roof rails?
EDIT:
Roof rails go from the rear to the front of the roof.
Roof bars attach to the roof rails and go from side to side.

I think we're all talking at cross purposes.
Chris ... are you after a roof rack that a roof tent will mount on?
Your original post talks about a roof rack that a roof rack would mount on. .

I've been having a similar question for a while... and I guess I'm really missing something....
As I understand it many roof tents and especially hard shell roof tents have two rails underneath running from front to back so that you can attach them to some sort of cross bars.
If the dynamic weight limit of the bars is higher than the weight of the tent then I dont quite get why a full roof rack is recommended. You'll spend a fortune on a full rack which you'll then promptly cover with a tent, getting none of the benefit of having a full rack.
Of course if you use a soft shell tent then it'll likely only cover half the rack and you'll still have half the rack available for other stuff..... In that case the rest of this post could be discarded!!
