Intermittent Loud Noise on Start up - with audio!

Every now and again when I start the car, there’s a load heavy rasping metallic noise (it sounds like heavy metal banging together repeatedly very quicly) that happens the instant it fires up (almost like the last sound the starter motor would make)?

Seems to happen randomly...

Any ideas please?

Could it be the starter motor retracting ?

I would hazard a guess ring gear teeth on their way out, but always cheaper and a lot easier to check the starter teeth first, then turn the engine over with a screwdriver and check all ring gear teeth.

Thanks very much for all the replies - if it is the ring gear teeth, is it a big job? Engine out (again!!)?

Sounds to me as if the starter is not retracting and sticking to the ring gear, it gets thrown back as soon as the engine starts.
The only thing is to remove the starter and clean the gear.
