Auto change query

There’s a junction I use regularly which is at the bottom of a hill, if the traffic is backed up I can be a way back from the junction, when I move off in 1st I assume from the revs she will not change up till I get to the bottom of the hill across the junction and then start going uphill by which time your doing quite a few revs😳

Quite a few hills where I live and going down them she has a habit of dropping into a low gear.

Problem or normal?

Use sport mode.

Or manual mode if that doesn’t help

So it’s not normal then? Sounds like a work around, if was in my manual I’d put it in 2nd to pull alway. Other than a few quirks and the fourth/fifth gear fault I got when towing the van the box performs fine under normal conditions.

The gear changes are self learning and the ecu takes information from a number of sources to determine what gear to use.
I know Brixham very well and it could be the fact the ecu has recorded so many steep hills and decents its just learnt to keep it in the lower gears.
The other thing to bare in mind is the gearbox will hold a lower gear when the engine is cold, so this could be normal or your temp sensor is not reading correctly.

You could try a hard reset to reset the learned values and see if that helps. https://www.disco3.co.uk/wiki/Hard_Reset

When going down hill They do keep a low gear for engine braking.

A quick blip on the accelerator if possible and she will change up Thumbs Up

Does the hard reset really clear the gearbox adaptive values?

Yes it resets all the ecu's back tothere base programs.

Or you can use diagnostics to reset it

This been tested? I cant belive ZF leaving important transmission data in volatile memory like that.

A hard reset will not reset the gearbox adaptions, they're stored in non-volatile ram. Trust me, having worked on auto transmission controls for JLR for 15 years, I think I would know if the hard reset worked. The adaptions wont even be cleared if you reflash the transmission ecu.

What you might be experiencing is an issue with the brake switch. The situation you're experiencing is when the gearbox internal modes are going from down hill to uphill and it relies on signals from other modules as well as switches. If the brake pedal switch is sticking on, it can delay the change over.

The adaption data in the transmission is there to take into consideration the tolerances of the mechanical clutches as well as wear on them. If you clear them, it can take around 1000 miles of driving to get them back to where you were before.

First thing will be to check the brake lights aren't sticking on.

you don't want to reset the gearbox adaptions manually. It will change gear like $h!t for 3 days

That all makes sense, my research had already pointed me towards leaving the adaptations well alone.

I’ve replaced the brake light switch as a matter of course due to another fault code.

I’m beginning to think I’ll leave well alone, as I’ve said generally it changes very well, it’s got fresh oil in it and I’ll just keep it that way and keep my fingers crossed.
