Ipod and the touch screen and interfaces and stuff

Been doing some research following on from Wiggs post a few weeks back regarding interfacing to the touchscreen.

There seem to be two products available now:

The first is from connects2 which is a simple interface which gives you a vga input to the touchscreen for a pc so you can use it as a monitor and also 2 video inputs so you can use it for other things, and a reversing screen input which changes automatically to show that camera as you reverse. It all sits under the passenger seat and seems to simply be a case of unplugging cables from the navigation unit and putting in different ones, and picking up some power from somewhere like the rear ciggie lighter.

It is all controlled by remote control rather than touching the screen, but I see it as a neat way of perhaps putting an old laptop in the glovebox with memorymap and also a ipod control product as well, and then dvd player etc if you wanted. All displaying via the nav screen. Obviously need to control the laptop via the original keyboard but once route is put on does this matter? Or use a small bluetooth keyboard.

Price seems reasonable at about £175

You could then hook up to this a new product coming in the next month from Alpine called the kce-425i which will output menus and video , album art and so on to an external display and again this is controllable via a remote control. Seems a good way of controlling an ipod while keeping it hidden away, plus you get album art etc on the display which sounds nice. Again the price as far as I can work out seems to be about £130 for this bit.

So far , so good...

There is another product on the market which Wiggs spotted on ebay which I've spoken with the company about. It will also interface to the Alpine KCE-425i and replicates the remote control on the touch screen so you can control the ipod via the touch screen. However looks a bit clunky and the company in the email sais the interface was a bit slow to scroll up and down a lot of artists. Also it can only control one thing. Have found it comes from a company called www.stagemotion.com. There is instructions on the site but it is in spanish which I don't speak...

Found a video of it working at http://www.snimci.net/video/kce-425i.html# but you need to click on the search box and type kce-425i and then click on the result that comes back.

Price I was quoted by the essex company was vague but looked to cost about £600 which seems steep for limited product.

I'll put a few bits in my gallery when I get a moment. I've not actually seen any of this but it all looks like the interface is slowly being cracked.

Hi Richard,

I will try and answer your customers questions as simply as possible!

I assume you could also use the remote control which I think comes with the unit? Or is the remote disabled?

>The standard interface kit will make the Alpine remote control redundant - all controls are done via the Range Rover touch screen. But if necessary we can supply an additional remote control harness splitter (About £8.00). This will enable you to use both the Touch Screen and the original remote.<When>I have just received an update from Alpine and they have advised me they expect them to be available from the end of next week, so I'm working on shipping them first week in April.<How>The interface only physically has 1 x A/V Input (3 x RCA Connections - Audio Left/Right & Video). But it is programmable to control up to 4 devices (This means we can program it with 4 x different remote control signals). We use the A/V1 / A/V2 from the TV Tuner or DVD player to add additional video sources to the system.

For this guy I would advise having the Alpine iPod kit (With splitter for use with original remote control) and the CKO changer kit which has the facility for an additional A/V for his extra device.

It's possible to add a Reverse Camera to this system but it's a totally different interface - cost for the interface only is about £150.<If>This guy doesn't want much!! I'm pretty sure this can be done but you would have to use a switch box so that the iPod and the DVD can operate independently. He would then also have to use the remote control splitter. No - the audio from our interface is integrated into the Range Rover system via the MOST F/O ring. We emulate the OE TV Tuner and provides us with the input into the system.<

I'm about to order the connects2 kit for £170 but I noticed some sites are £300 odd.

They reckon a few days to come into stock.

Want to get a kce-425i as well so let me know what you find...

I've found a old laptop which I'm gonna use with memory map, so in theory I should be able to get o/s maps on the sat nav screen .... and stuff the laptop in the glovebox.

Just emailed to se if I can get some form of discount for a number of these.

I'm also on a circulation list for a trade only in car journal (Don't know how, but I used to blag my way as a dealer to buy stuff at trade prices through my own IT company)

I'll look in the next issue and see if I can find some trade sources for this kit.

I'm not into selling car hifi stuff by the way, I just install computer networks and the like.

Should be able to, because as far as I can see it just outputs video and left and right with a infra red interface. That's all I'm gina use the connects 2 for.

Trying to Achieve

PC via Nav Screen (not bothered about touch interface will use proper keyboard)

TV on the move

DVD via Nav Screen

Rear Camera (Which comes on automatically)

From what I've read all is doable (I hope)
