What are the chances of that?

After cutting a failed padlock from a gate, I turned round and the local scrap-man was passing; I tossed the padlock into the back of his Transit tipper and he didn't even have to slow down. What are the chances of that?! Shocked

We’ve got some roving scrapmen around here. I’m renovating a house at the moment, and every day for the past week I’ve had a load of scrap metalwork from the defunct central heating. Each day I’ve put it at the end of the drive, and each morning it’s gone!

^^

When I changed all the plumbing in our house, I saved all the copper an brass, and the off-cuts of new, and weighed it in. Got about £60 for it. That's just pipes and taps, not cylinder.

I think they’ve done quite well out of me. They’ve had hot water cylinder, boiler, 7 radiators, loads of copper pipe, also had the old driveway gates.

You've had money from them in return? If not, can I sell you this bridge I own...?

Friends of ours flushed a radiator and put it outside their front door just to drain out, their private drive is around 70 foot long. Walked back in the house for about two minutes, went back out and the rad' had gone, no sign of anybody anywhere Laughing

I drain mine in the back garden for that very reason... luckily they asked before taking. Had I not been in sight, not sure they would've.

Useto be a massive problem when new heating systems were installed on new developments , when the morning came at least 6 x houses were stripped of copper including the boiler

Different story when plastic started to be used and wouldn’t fit the boiler or hot water till later

Blimey talk about being brazen, Had that with an old cast iron roll top bath , was doing a total bathroom rip out, put the bath in the front garden as was going to get it re enamelled, alas was gone and again didn’t hear a thing , could have only been outside for 10 x minutes or so

Shame as it also had all the claw feet

Think churches now have a lead roofing substitute to try and prevent theft

Back in the early seventies I served my apprenticeship with one of the major M&E contractors.
As part of the on the job training, apprentices went out on site working with a commissioning engineer. My site was a big hotel nearing completion in West London.
Thermostatic shower mixers were being installed in each bathroom.
A plumber was installing these and realised he had left something in the bathroom he had just finished and when he went back the mixer had been removed! It turned out this wasn't an isolated case and in the end they only fitted them as rooms were finished and locked off.

My Plumber always makes out he’s doing me a favour removing copper pipe, copper hot water cylinder and 12 radiators. Made a big story out of plummeting scrap prices. Said he got a couple of pennies for it. The lying bCensoredd. Evil or Very Mad

The answer to such lies is "fine, I'll get rid of it myself then". Cool

Think copper tube , hot water cylinders are around £6.00 per KG,

As an average ripping out a full heating system , 10 x rads I useto get around £200, did take time removing all the nuts/ olives but got a better price and could then scrap the brass nuts in separately

Stopped doing site work seeing so many of my tools were nicked, including complete bathroom suites etc , van getting broken into a stealing all the fittings
