Did I damage the half shaft?
Morning all,
Just replaced the lower front wishbone on my 56 plate disco 3 2.7. Everything is back together and all the nuts and bolts are tight but I’m getting a bit of a chunking when coming off the gas. I did manage to disengage the outer part of the half shaft from the inner coupling. It twisted round when it came out and was only held together by the boot. I sorted it and popped it back in, the. It looked ok. But will it have been damaged as it came apart?
Any advice would be most welcome.

The end of the u/v joint could have come off inside the rubber gaiter, check to see if there is play in the shaft when you twist forwards and backwards.

Brilliant video. I like those guys 😁 thanks for the replies.
No rotational play at all. Only lateral play which I would have thought would be needed due to the suspension travel.
Now I’m thinking the noise was there before but the lower wishbone was louder?

There shouldn't be any play at all. Yes there it allows for movement when suspension travels but you shouldn't notice this by hand because the other end is fixed to the wheel.
How much did you disassemble to remove the lower arm?

The lateral play was between the two joints the outer section is tight to the hub and the inner joint is firm too.
I undid the outer upper swivel on the upper wishbone and the top of the drop link. All are torqued up. The fixings on the lower wishbone are also torqued up. So much easier than the other side to get too!

If the shaft is moving between the two CVs then refer to flacks post.

Will replace it as it’s a reasonably easy job. Though what’s it like to get the inner end out?

Needs a damn good yank. There's a clip on the splines that hold it in. It'll feel like you've forgotten to undo something. Just don't crack your head open when it finally comes out and you go rolling back across the floor. Getting the spline out the hub can be difficult sometimes and sometimes not.
If you struggle to get the inner joint out of the diff just leave it in there and cut the the metal clip holding the rubber boot on and pullit back to inspect the joint.
I would check this first, if its ok it is just a clip replacement, if not remove the shaft leaving the inner part in place and reassemble it using new grease and clips., big tywraps are the way to go if you do not have the big pliers for the metal clips.

It was the cv. One of the rollers fell off when I took it apart. Guessing it was on the way out and disturbing it brough it’s demise forward.
