Rear wheel bearing - indie cost, and is it a DIY?

Have a rumbling sound which is coming from the rear offside corner of my D3, particularly noticeable around 60mph+... it does get louder with a little throttle but is still there when off the gas.

Prop centre bearing looks ok. I'm guessing it could be the rear wheel bearing as this was last changed at 105k, now at 240k.

Made an enquiry at a local independent, they estimated circa £400 + VAT per side which seemed really steep to me! Does anyone know if this is about right, or too much?

I've done basic servicing myself before - oil and filter changes etc, and have changed front hubs. Is this a job you'd recommend DIYing ? I don't have a press to remove / install the bearings so would be asking for advice on what tools to get

Thanks all

Chris

if no press it will be "nice" mission to DIY as whole knuckle has to be loose / disconnected to play with bearing

or try this:
good luck

worth saving 900 plus quid

Mine failed its MOT on a rear bearing back in March (but I’ll let it off as it was the only mark against the vehicle).

With some very precise marking (for vague re-alignment) I removed the knuckle. I got the bearing for “£whatever the proper bearing cost at the time” and took it, the new bush and the knuckle about a mile up the road to an agri-workshop with a big (BIIIG) press. A crispy £20 note and made a brew while he worked it. Even managed to not destroy the dust shield with some very inventive blocking, slightly bent but it straightened out easy enough. Got it all back together and had the MOT place check the alignment (bang on apparently!) and retest.

I wasn’t out £100 at the end, possibly even including the MOT, I forget. Easiest and cheapest fail-pass I’ve ever had on a vehicle.

Maybe there’s someone close to you who would take a crisp note if you arrive with some parts (though, noting you’re location it could be a £50 or even less crispy £100 note)

Thanks guys. This evening will be spent doing some research and watching YT vids... I would like to DIY if possible, really really don't want to spend a grand on wheel bearings. The Disco has those funds available to it, but preferably for something I can't do myself Rolling with laughter turbo, gearbox, engine... Embarassed

Anyone got a link to a press I would be able to use to remove and install the bearings? Just trying to get an idea of the kind of thing I need, and cost. Failing that I'll prepare a crisp note or two and look for someone useful Laughing

I recently moved to London which limits options as I don't know of any good independents here. I do regularly travel back to Glos and Yorkshire though where we have family and more know a few decent shops.

Looking on AF there's a choice between FAG, Meyle, and Bremen bearings - which is best please?

And... will this kind of thing be my best bet for getting the bearings in and out, without a proper press? Seems similar to what the guy in the YT vid used

Maybe something like this https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-csa...nch-press/ for not a lot more money. Could be useful in the future.

I have found Timken are the better ones for land rovers.

You will need a sensible sized press, that 4 ton one will not touch it.

Mechanic we've known for years in Glos has said he'll do the job for £50 cash if I brought the bearing... Whistle pretty happy with that compared to the other £400+VAT quote. DIY will have to wait for another day.

Can't seem to be able to find Timken bearing for the rear though?

thanks guys Thumbs Up hopefully this banishes the annoying rumbling once and for all...

One reason I'm dubious though is that the noise gets worse when I apply some throttle, better when you lift off completely (though still there). Would this happen if it was a bearing causing the noise?

Other prime suspects I guess are rear diff, AT, transfer ... ? Certainly sounds like it's coming from the back RH side though. Confused

easiest thing is to raise the car and check the play in bearings to eliminate unnecessary job ? Wink

No movement in the bearing and passed MOT without advisories on that topic, but I was under the impression they could still be noisy / on their way out without presenting movement on the D3.

I just find the noise annoying, I do a lot of long distance motorway driving and it's at its worst at motorway speeds which ruins the otherwise lovely drive that the D3 gives. so really want it sorted, play in bearings or not Neutral

The rears also haven't been changed in 140k miles or thereabouts. So I figure no harm done for the sake of the cost of the bearing and £50 for the garage as I'm sure they can't be in the best nick.
