Tail gate High level rear stop light adhesive…..Puzzled!
Just maybe someone has had similar experience. My rear stop light unseated ( mechanical fixing missing anyway ) and following some threads from here I thought it was an easy fix with a branded “windscreen bonding adhesive”. I am now surprised as two weeks later the tailgate / lens component bond has failed.
Applied on warm sunny day, wiped down all surfaces with rubbing alcohol + put slight tension with clamps for setting and to achieve a shut line. Photo shows no bond at all to plastic lens but plenty on tailgate.
Any ideas on why ?

I would say that it's faulty bonding agent [unless the light unit was contaminated with a grease film].
I replaced mine a couple of months ago due to some failed LEDs.
It's a heck of a job to replace as it needs to be set about with a lump hammer and bolster chisel to destroy the old light unit [in order to remove], then chisel out the old bonding agent.
There are no mechanical fittings, it relies 100% on the bonding agent.
edited to add: I used Everbuild Tecnic Puraflex 40 High Modulus PU Sealant and Adhesive, Black 300 ml
and all is holding strong

+1 for suspecting contamination on the housing. I'd guess nice shiny clean with silicone based stuff before previous fitting..

In hindsight, just wondering how the light unit was off in the first place, that required it to be rebonded?I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

What a great site this is so many thought provoking answers, some further bits of info that may add to puzzle!
The Copart car was bought with the light de bonded and we thought an easy fix in fact we do not know how it came to be separate , plugging it all in it works. As you cannot usually see the unit dissembled it does “appear” to have some broken locating clips or spacers inside but concede “mechanical fixings is a bit clumsy however the missing bits would not appear to stop a refix exercise.
Why I am sceptical of the cleaning/contamination is that I did clean with the alcohol both lens and tail gate quite well but it does look evident of a contamination failure. Now I think I will look again at the manufacturers instructions as there is no two part solution that I can recall but I may have missed that trick again though the adhesive on the tailgate is really well bonded.
At the moment I am settling upon :
A. Contamination
B. Too much tension used on clamps for set time in order to get the shut line ( we have two full scale models to review ) correctly set
I will start again and use another adhesive as Everbuild Tecnic Puraflex 40 High Modulus PU Sealant and Adhesive, Black 300 ml or TEROSON PU 8596 as here. As a footnote I will report back but I wonder as elsewhere in another thread on here whether it would have saved a lot of time if I would have bought a salvage tail gate so another Saturday on DiscologyD3 2.7 Zermatt silver (not another one)
