MOT Fail on emissions?

Hi everyone,

2007 D3 TDV6 - 180k miles - FSH

It's my daily drive, plenty of motorway miles.

Have owned my lovely TDV6 for 18 months, already spent a bit on it, most recently both belts and oil pump, prop, clutch, flywheel and recon gearbox. It's just failed it's MOT on emissions with an advisory of black smoke under acceleration.

I took it the (great) guys who did the work above who plugged it in and got no fault codes, quick check around for evidence of split hoses or manifolds, nothing to report.

Chucked a bottle of some Diesel cleaner from Halfords (I know) in it and drove round for an hour and got it nice and hot before heading straight for it's retest...it failed again Sad Looking for some good advice of what to try to solve it please.

Run a couple of tankfuls of "super/premium/advanced" through it (especially, if you tend to use supermarket fuel.

May just do the trick.

The Halfrauds cleaner may not have had enough time/distance to work anyway.

Would also vouch for decent fuel making a difference. I have been using miller's diesel power ecomax which does seem to smooth things out too.

Not been remapped to the best of my knowledge. No mention of it from previous owner and no paperwork present to suggest it has been either.

I took it to the MOT place the guy who does my work suggested, ran it through it's emissions and it flew through....twice!

Turns out the EGR's have been blanked, I didn't realise Embarassed

Can't get it in there for a full test for 2 weeks though!

Ordered a new intercooler hose yesterday so will fit that and a new air filter in the meantime, doesn't hurt. Smile

Hi. Is this telling me that the Halfords additive and/or premium fuel plus more miles made the difference, or were different settings used for the Pass knowing the EGRs are blanked?

Wouldn’t be different test setting if the egrs are blanked as it’s an automatic fail if the MOt tester finds them blanked, constitutes tampering Whistle

I blanked mine some 3 months ago, how anybody thought the amount of gunge I found in the intakes would be a good idea god only knows.

Had its MoT last month, the tester was impressed how low the emissions were for its age/mileage. Just under 10% of the pass limit so little effect from the EGR delete.

What happens if you use the same garage as your routine LR specialist and as your MOT test centre? They will know if you've got a blanked EGR and duty-bound to fail it when they move it across to the MOT bay. ...Asking for a friend of course! Whistle

MoT are not allowed to remove parts to access anything, they just test and measure. One of the reasons most LED lamps are not failed
