Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, it actually stopped raining, for about 15 minutes at about 4 am this morning. However, weather aside everyone seemed to enjoy the trip and the campsite bar was well attended despite been ankle deep in mud. The campsite was slightly reminiscent of Billing last year.
Ryan prepared a choice of routes, easy, not so easy, and not really very easy at all. (Ryan, don't forget to have a 'word' with your mate - driveable my )
I decided to do the harder of the routes on day 1, and was accompanied by the entire Irish contingent along with a few others. Everything was going really well until we got halfway along the Coach Road. I knew it was in bad condition after my mate got stuck in a hole over Easter, however it was on the route card and Ryan assured me that the hole was filled in, and his mate had driven it recently.
When we got to the said hole it certainly looked deep, but with Ryans advice in my head, and plenty of assistance available to recover I decided to have a go - big mistake. It was very deep and Betsy got stuck firmly. Chris Tyler got the ground anchors out, and much as Betsy tried with her winch, all we succeeded in doing was ploughing the peat with the ground anchor.
Plan B was a winch out backwards, courtesy of Bobbycrispbox. This was going well until a hidden rock got wedged under the car and lifted the rear wheels up and right so one fell into the ditch, the bank then gave way and the front went in too, I can tell you that limpet mode was fully engaged, with a good grip on the seat with both cheeks I honestly thought she was going over!
There then followed a winch recovery of great complexity. Marcus drove his G4 up the side of the track, faced Betsy and wedged a wheel on a rock. He attached his winch rope to the front of Betsy. BCB's winch was still attached to the rear, and was the only thing stopping Betsy tipping over into the ditch. Marcus started to pull Betsy's front wheels sideways out of the ditch, with BCB pulling the rear up at the same time. It was working well until Marcus' plasma snagged on his winch bracket and snapped!
A quick repair to the plasma courtesy of Chris Tyler got the recovery back on track, and Betsy was rescued. Only damage was a badly bent gearbox crossmember under the chassis, a snapped exhaust mounting caused by the rear spring shackle getting badly displaced by the force of the winch. Nothing unrepairable.
Anyway, that was my highlight, witnessed by most attendees as the recovery took so long that all the other groups got stuck behind us. There was no way through so the entire convoy had to turn around and drive out of the lane the way we went in.
There was lots more went on, I'll let others tell their stories. Silver TDV6 HSE
