I'm in the US... On my 2005 LR3, V6 4.0. I have a persistent problem. Intermittently when I start the key will stay in the start position and the car remains cranking with the key hand released but doesn't start. I changed the cam sensor, plugs, wires, filters and let two shops rip me off. All the wires in the rocker tunnel are dry and connections, where needed, were "refreshed" years ago. I have the Gap tool... the only code I get is one the car came with that revealed that the former owner changed a gearbox and it's serial number has never been re-identified as part of this car. I'm trying to learn how to change that number that ECU sees, with my GAP tool... But the car ran "dash light" free and does now, almost consistently, so I haven't considered it crucial. The crank/non-start only happens when I drive to a place where I don't have a backup vehicle or plan and I started to trust the car again. Can anyone help. The "Black Prince" can only get driven to secure places.

Sounds like you have 2 problems.
1) Starter keeps going
2) not starting
Regarding 1, I would remove the starter relay under the bonnet.
Find the 2 contacts to bridge to make the starter run.
Bridge it several times. If it keeps going after the link has been removed, you probably need a new starter
2) Have you considered changing the crank sensor , or check the live value on the gap tool when cranking with no start
Contact gap to get the gearbox vin changed, but this is the least of your problems

Not sure about the V6, but the V8 has "auto start" in that sense that you quickly flick the key to starting position and the starter keeps cranking until the engine fires "hands off".
I guess there should be some timeout if the engine does not fire, but not sure how long that would be.
Regarding starting issue, it will be much easier to troubleshoot when the problem is present, prepare a plan on what to check. Is fuel present at rail? Do you have spark? Does rev counter move with starter going? If possible, check live values with IID. Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue
