| Beginners Jolly Boys Outing Around Marlborough, May 10th |
|
EDIT - I have had to change this to Sat 10th MAY. Sorry for the inconvenience
If any "beginners" are interested in a day in the Wiltshire Lanes around Marlborough then sign up here.
If you are interested I will take a max of 4 around the lanes for a day on Saturday 10th May. The route will be relatively easy and suitable for road tryes. If its been raining then there should be a reasonable amount of mud and some good ruts, water splashes and slippery grassy ascents. There is also a small play area we can go to at the end of the day if you wish.
This isnt training, if thats what you are after then best to speak to AndrewS or TFC for that and get yourself off to Boughrood or somewhere similar.
We can run through the basics before we set off and it will be a follow the leader (hence the small number) for the day stopping at a pub for lunch.
In order to give the best advice to everyone and to ensure no-one gets into trouble whilst we are on route, a PMR radio will be highly desirable. If every one hasnt got a PMR then we will have to stop at each obstacle
You will also need good sturdy boots and change of cloths for the pub, just incase there is lots of mud...
I have plenty of ropes and shackles so you dont have to worry about those, although if you have them bring them along
I could also do with 1 other experienced person to bring up the rear of the convoy, making a max of 6 cars
There is no cost for this, although a donation to the site would be a good gesture _________________ Duncan

this will be real basic stuff steve. the idea is that its for people who have never done it before. I dont want more than 6 cars in the convoy as it becomes dangerous. I would rather keep it to total beginners if thats ok, sorry
However, i'm doing a recce on 9th if you are interested ? _________________ Duncan

I've got no off road kit at all, apart from wellies ofc, hope this is ok.
With regards to the radio, could you advise what I need to buy.
Let me know postcode for satnav and time to meet etc.
cheers

I'll have ropes, shackles, air jack, compressor etc, no doubt DD will have same + a winch. He'll have to do the route in reverse gear in case anyone gets stuck behind him.

On the radio, there are several options, but essentially break down to the following.......
Cheap n cheerful twin pack from most electrical places circa £50
Pros' = Cheap
Cons = Lack of Distance, Clarity, battery life, accesories, water/mud ingress, may not work with some of the scrambled channels
Motorola, Yaesu, ENTEL
Pro's = Better Distance, clearer speech, rechargeable with decent battery life. and if you get the ENTEL PMR446 submersible, then it'll work even after it's been dropped in the mud/river/puddles etc.
Cons = more expensive
My personal opinion is the Entel is the dog's danglies & I know of at least one member who has added an Entel to his PMR collection over a Motorola.
JMC will be able to provide you with prices (unbeatable for new) of the Entel (& whetever else you might want to look for).
I liked my Entel so much, that I bought another one!
The Entel ones just blast over the cheaper PMR's.
Just my view of course, but I don't think you can get much better if you can afford it. I've used mine in mountains walking in snow and rain, off road and just in convoy on the motorway. _________________ TDV6 HSE Black, Black Wheels /MTR's, Black RRS front/rear LR badge (tbf) Black Leather, Black Glass, Black TowB, Shiny Tasmods, Dull Mantec, White Reflective D3 Sticker, Black steering wheel badge, black air intake.
Need black RRS wheel centre caps.
We D3, therefore we are..........

I'd like to come along, being someone that spends most of the time on the motorway network. Don't have any off road kit either, but have boots etc.
I do have a pair of radios, but don't know if they are the right ones! The box says 8 channels with scan function with a 2 mile radius. Any advice if these will be okay. probably the cheap and cheerful ones!
Thanks, Nic
