have you looked at the Cooper ST's. The STT's are probably a bit OTT for everyday driving but the STs are a good tyre on and off road. Mine cost me about £85 per tyre fitted and the last set lasted 42,000 miles and still have 5 mm on them when i changed.

To be honest, though I may be completely wrong here so I'm prepared for abuse, if you're going to be on the road the high majority of the time but may occasionally 'step' off it for an off-road event and such, you might just be worth sticking with road tyres. The D3 has so many traction aids and throttle controls that it can get to many places you would venture on off-road tyres without difficulty. With TR dialed into the correct preset, and under sensible throttle (without flooring it if you think you're going to lose grip), road tyres on a D3 will get you to places you didn't think possible.

We've been on 2 sets of Wranglers and in the few times we've been off-road (including some wet and muddy derelict lanes in Scotland) they've never let us down - not even lost traction. Granted, the off-road tyres have their uses in certain situations, but if you're only planning on going off-road occasionally and don't plan on anything hair-raising then I reckon road tyres are ideal, without increasing road noise or damaging your fuel consumption. They certainly do have "decent off road ability".

You don't get the looks though.

You dont think I'm that vain do you.... Whistle

Thanks for that advice CY. Seeing I dont do huge milage anyway and coming up is my first organised off-road excursion, and coupled with the fact I can buy a 'meatier' tyre in the UK for a lot lot less than your bog standard ones over here, I might as well go for something that has that extra bite.

And if it improves the looks than thats just a bonus.

Cheers Dunc - I do fancy them coopers alright Razz

re mpg. i didnt notice any difference after fitting the ST's over the Pirelli zeros. I intended just keeping them for offroad and swapping back to the pirelli's other times. they were so good, not much extra noise and no diff in mpg so i kept them on, and they last twice as long as the road tyres for half the price Thumbs Up

Shocked

I only paid about £80-85 but that was 12months ago. I think the last time I spoke to the tyre guy he was still quoting about the same a month or so ago. The STTs are more expensive, but i still got these for under £100 a tyre and next day delivery
