sounds like a motor in its final throws of life. I would remove the compressor cover and have a look maybe even get some fused wire and a spare battery to try and run the compressor before spiking the D3 electronics or leave it as is and let the dealer sort it in a few weeks
FYI I am not an auto electrician but an industrial electrician and am speaking from what I see at work so may be consult an auto elctrician with the appropriate diags.

Thanks for your help Catweasel! Thumbs Up

I've put in an new fusible link and all is working for now. Got a short 400km hop tomorrow, so hopefully it will hold out. The air tank was depleted so it took a while to fill, but there was no smell or abnormal noise from the compressor.

I'll get it checked in Perth monday week.
 Have a nice day!

100km since and alls' still well.

Incidently, the fusible links are only $2.97 each so I'll be stocking up on a couple of each!

HI Jamo,

Glad it worked out for you, you aloos reminded me that at least 18 month ago I bought some spare fusible links and fuses and carefully put them in a box for a trip. I better find them and get them back in the travel bag.

3000km since and zap, she's gone again. Sad

Put another one in and all's ok for the moment.

Off to Perth in June to have it checked out again. I think Catweasel's right and the compressor is dying a slow death.

If that's the case I'll get it replaced and take the old one to see if it can be repaired to be carried as a spare.

My pocket's a bit lighter now! Big Cry

The compressor motor was stuffed (or so the dealer says). One new compressor at $980 plus fitting at $575.

I got the old one back so I'm going to see if it can be repair so I can exchange it for the new one when it eventually gives up the ghost too.

The service manage tried to tell me that the sill protection plate on the rock slider had reduced ariflow around the motor causing it to fail prematurely; as the holes therein didn't seem big enough.

I pointed out to him that this didn't make sense as the accoustic box that LR put's around the compressor has no ventilatiuon holes at all. He then changed the subject. Why he needed to say anything I don't know. The car is out of warranty anyway. I wish these so called 'service managers' would learn a bit about service and stop bull Censored ing the customers.

if it can be rewound (not all can) then it will be a far cheaper option. bad news none the less.
