Hi Folks -and thanks Tim,
Thank you everyone for helping make such a great day. I have to confess that I was very unsure at the beginning as to how much support there would be - at one stage I felt it was likely to be me, myself and I sitting in the corner drinking wine by the glass - but I need not have worried….great bunch of people (26 guests in 9 of Solihull’s finest) and if the comments and feedback you provided on the day were anything to go by, it will not be the last. I know that Anita and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and look forward to the next occasion.
Tim in particular should be congratulated and gets the distance award, having driven down from Queensland to join us.
To those who were unable to make it, although you did miss out, we now have a core group of dynamic people around which we should be able to develop and organise further activities - and your contributions and participation will be more than welcome, and essential, to make it work.
However, I thought it appropriate to provide a platform from which to move forward with the dynamism expressed at the lunch, along with some ideas on which I hope you will comment.
First of all, as discussed with all attendees, I proposed that this group should provide the nucleus for a Discovery 3 Register within the Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria (LROCV); added incentive was been given to this idea by the fact that a significant number of those who attended are already members of the LROCV.
Everyone I spoke to expressed support for this idea and the non-members indicated that they would be happy to join the LROCV if such a focused interest group is formed.
There are many benefits associated with moving this group to be a part of a large and dynamic club and it should substantially widen the opportunities afforded to participants.
I have contacted the club president concerning the proposal to create a Discovery 3 Register and have just received an enthusiastic response; it will be put up at the next committee meeting and I gather should be approved; this should then lead to the formal establishment of the Register. It may also be appropriate to invite owners of Range Rover Sports and the latest Range Rovers - to join us, in which case perhaps we should call ourselves the Discovery 3/TRG Register - TRG not referring to an elite police group but rather to “Terrain Response Group”.
Being part of a large club need not stifle our own ideas for entertainment – whether it is simply getting together for a lunch or dinner, having a “covers off” exposée of maintenance issues and “soft” points on top of and underneath the Discovery 3 (at a friendly garage), arranging trips or maybe a session at a Kart track (and no, I am not suggesting Disco 3s racing on a Kart track…!). Some may even like to consider more wide ranging activities – such as a day out with a glider club or ballooning, given that the purchase of this vehicle suggests the involvement of an adventurous spirit…
Everyone who attended or who expressed interest in this group should have received either a PM or an email from me (some may even get both....). Anyone not on the circulation list who would like to know more, please let me know. Hopefully we shall be able to organise a range of interesting and/or useful activities with the Discovery 3 (and current RR/RRS) as the focus.
Please let me know if you would like to know more.
All the best,
