I have had the same transmission whine from new. Dealer noted and if it gets worse will investigate. Could be the transfer box issue. What was the problem with the tranfer box? Getting there is half the fun

Any decent dealer when sourcing noises will go out in your vehicle 'two up'.
One drives, whilst the other moves around the interior to source point of noise.
When this is established, they'll then test specific areas with a stethescope to identify the problem component.
Then further investigations on that suspect component when back in garage on ramps/or axle stands. .

Not that I'm any expert but my first D3 gave every fault possible,
I experienced a drone noises at about 50MPH again like yours not under power, did not matter which gear or even towing,
when i took it to the stealer they said to me that they where replacing the rear prop shaft,
They told me something about balance weights on it, or the it had been distorted
any way changing it solved to problem.
hope this helps D3 and love it!!!

I had exactly the same problem inthe last month I owned my D3 and the dealer replaced the diff both times.
I fixed it twice as well! (I just think the first one they put in was broken!) D3 05 SE (old one)

I also experience the same problem. My dealer replace the rear differentials and the sound gone now. (the only problem is the delaying in replacement. It takes me 34 days to wait for a new genuine rear differentials sent by DHL from UK )

I expect if he reads this he may decide to take the day off.
What on earth did they do to upset you. I thought they had a fantastic reputation.

What did they do? They tried to treat me like I was borne yesterday, that's what. I don't know what the hell they did with my car for the three days they had it, but with the exception of a PDC sensor being replaced the list of warranty concerns was returned with a "unable to recreate" against all of them, including the diff noise and steering knocks. Was assured they had checked the diff oil for metal particles and was all clear and that there was no problem with the steering or the bushes.
If that's the case I can only assume their technician's guide dog had an off day, or he would have seen this:

which is one very, very leaky diff. Note the absence of any evidence that the drain and level check plug has been removed, which would make an oil check a little difficult to do.
As for the steering all being fine....

I'd sugest the oil gushing out from the failed seal at the top of the steering rack should have given them some kind of hint. wd40 has lubrication properties similar to spit. And what's good enough for the girls......
