Collected a new air filter from dealer this afternoon, fitted it in 5 mins when i got home, easiest home servicing on a car i have ever done. have done 34000 and old filter was fairly dirty.
Trip out this evening, fuel consumption over journey i do alot was up by about 4 to 5 mpg, on that basis it's a 20% increase in fuel economy & payback on the filter will be about 10 days.
Might also mention that the engine sounds quieter and feels livelier. Am getting the best out of my Torq Tune once again!

Well I guess they see the engine running within certain parameters (that I doubt includes an MPG figure) and leave the filter alone.

I took my 'old' one out this morning [to replace it with the new K&N].
It's been in for over 11k miles and it still looked like new.
Nice light cream colour with bright red/pink border.
Seemed a shame to throw it out!
Just goes to show - some dealers do and some dealers don't! Blessed are the cracked, for they shall let in the light.

Not black with extra black area where engine draws air like mine then
Think it depends on how much use the car gets as well...

Got mine this morning from my local (non-franchised) garage. He had one genuine LR filter in his store, good timing. Mine has done 36000 and the old filter was pretty filthy. Hopefully get the same good result with mpg (fingers crossed) ' ' Bonatti HSE... Ah yes, a vintage colour!

This is the best I've ever got (photo attached):
41.3 mpg on a 500 mile round trip (almost all motorway along the M4) to Wales, using this method: 59mph on the speedo, command shift it into 6th, RPM at 1600 or so, set cruise, occasionally drop into N for long downhills, occasionally drop into D to zip past a bus/truck/caravan, etc. Aircon is on, headlights are on, music is on, 3 adults, 4 kids, no roofbox, no towing, no additives, tesco fuel. Makes a useful range of 780, I think.

I've always avoided dropping the auto box into neutral - is it generally accepted to be OK to do this (ignoring the safety aspect and thinking more about mechanical issues)?

I always thought the same for an auto. You are not supposed to tow it in neutral so it cant be good to run it down a hill like that. Global Warming.... I'm luvvin it.

The best answer for the Auto box problem is to buy a proper car with a manual gearbox
(runs for cover...)
I always thought that an engine on "overrun" or "engine breaking" was very fuel efficient, in fact i was sure that when Clarkson ran than Audi A8 to Scotland and back he said he had been advised by Audi it used less fuel like this than at idle?
But then, when has anything Clarkson said ever been valid?!!!

OK, but the focus is on the 'occasional'. I'm not sure about if using N to coast along is bad for an auto, but it's something I've always done and no adverse effects (on any car) so far, and the D3 never actually complains. It's such a heavy car that it seems bonkers not to use the momentum to assist the mpg. On the motorway, cruising at, say, 60mph, I find that on a suitable stretch of road the D3 picks up speed (in N) fairly quickly. Then as the gradient levels, I wait for the mph to gradually fall back to my cruise speed, then into D, command shift into 6th, press cruise back on.
