I am no expert here but apparently running an auto box in Neutral at high speed can result in damage to the torque converter.

Blimey. That would indeed be a worry. But, as I said, using N has become my 'normal practice' over 15 years and hundreds of thousands of miles of driving autos from Ford, BMW, Audi, MB, LR, and it's never been a problem yet. And on this particular journey, the 'occasional' was so 'occasional' as to be statistically next to irrelevant. So....

Torque converter no, gearbox yes as most modern gearboxes both manual and auto have oil pumps driven by the front of the box. If you coast or tow at speed you will drive the gearbox from the rear and this will cause premature damage. Not seeing whether the ZF box fitted to the D3 has this setup I'd air on the side of caution and leave it in drive with foot off gas Wink

The car had its 30K service 2 weeks ago, and yesterday, on the same journey using the same technique, I could only get 34 MPG...

Australia 2005 Discovery 3 4.4 V8 HSE Auto Maya Gold

Just got 11.3 litres/100km (about 20 Mile/US Gallon) on my V8 on a 450km jaunt over the weekend. Didn't do anything different (even slightly lower fuel grade Rolling Eyes ) byt it was pleasantly cool, about 10 deg C. Tyres were at 40/45 psi and drove at or below 100 km/hr. Strange but delighted.
