As is often the case, old vehicles that are a bit battered on the outside are bloody good underneath, and vice versa! The Chassis seems pretty good, no serious rust, no holes, no cracks, all is well.

One small repair to do by the fuel tank cross piece.

The only problems body wise are the Driver and Passenger footwells.

Found a price for replacement/repair footwells for £15 each.
And will need a new drivers side door top @ £23.50
New exhaust needed, manifold ok, but the rest is shot... have yet to find a price.
There are no leaks, tiny amount of seapage around the rear diff filler plug, probably rectified by a new ring. Bit of very old dried oily mud on sump, there is no new leakage so im guessing this coule be oil split when filling at some point.
Unfortunately I cant drive the thing....yet. But got Dad to take her for a spin around the farm with me this morning to check the stock. She went really well. I t was a bit of a trip down memory lane, he used to drive about in a blue series 3 like this when I was a kid.
Most of the electrics are working, execpt the indicators. Shouldnt be too much trouble to sort.
I think she is probably worth doing, but welcome anyone elses opinion. If I can get her through the MOT without much drama I will start to sort her out properly.
Couple of interior shots. Seats need a re-trim!

Chances are no one is interested in the progress of this old heap, but I hope you dont mind me posting it anyway!
Havnt been on the forum much of late, I seem to be becoming a little obsessed with my affair with Cerys. So far I have replaced the exhaust, flushed and renewed the oil in the engine, gearbox, transferbox, axles and 'tractor joints'. Greases everything and treated her to new filters. Dash has been out, wiring all sorted, everything works now! I have repaired the nearside left panel ang galv strip.
Perfect 2nd hand wings are about ready to go on. Have just sprayed the new door ready to fit, when the hinge kit finaly turns up.
Started on the footwell repairs today. No point trying to bodge them up with plates, removed drivers side neatly with the Plasma (bloody brilliant piece of kit!) today and prepared it ready for the new footwell. Fabricating a new door pillar bottom while we're at it.
Jobs to do: Fit the new wings, service brakes and renew shoes, re-trim seats, then prep for re-spray.
This might be one for Gareth.... Seriously considering renewing the leaf springs and shocks while Im at it for peace of mind. Just wondering wether the extra £120 or so is worth it for parabolics? Powered by :

I did a complete rebuild of a S3 a couple of years ago. Sold it on now but I've got all the manuals. They'll just fester in my garage. If you want them, you're welcome. I'll be back in UK three weeks and I can try to get them into the D3 courier system (Devon to Hereford anyone?). It includes two Haynes manuals, parts manual and a full LR workshop manual in loose leaf form. Could even throw in a hub nut box spanner if I can find it.
Let me know if you want them

Sidney, re parabolic springs.
Having spent years bouncing around on military spec springs, I fitted parabolics last year in the preparation for my Morocco trip. They do completely transform the ride of the vehicle. However, there are some downsides.
If you intend to carry heavy loads, then get the heavy duty parabolics. The standards are very soft indeed, and I actually snapped a front spring due to the extra weight of my winch and bonnet mounted spare.
Go for the best shock absorbers you can afford, I recommend the Pro-Comps. 3000 series should be fine for a swb.
You will get a certain amount of 'axle wrap' with parabolics. This is the axle reacting to the torque through the halfshaft to the wheels. The effect is a certain amount of 'kangaroo' effect when you set off.
Definitly get poly bushes in the springs and shock absorbers. Standard bushes will last only days with the extra movement.
I got mine from CPC components, who are really good. They replaced my front springs for heavy duty items when I snapped a normal duty spring for only the difference in price, despite me having used the springs off road for several months.

Sidney, don't get too obsessed mate - did you see the programme last night on TV (Ch 5 I think) about the 2 guys in the USA who were seriously in love with their cars? It was shocking - if I explain what was going on in this thread I'll probably be banned for life Let's just say they should probably not be roaming the streets
Keep the pics coming though - really good to see. I recently had a 1992 90, but it had spent it's life in the Shetland Islands so was seriously rotten. The rear shock mounts fell off the axle, the gearbox cross member was rusted in place, the doors were impossible to shut as the outer skin was seperated from what remains of the frame, and the whole bulkhead moved when the bonnet was opened
Someone bought it on ebay though, as it would never have got another MOT without a total chassis up rebuild
I've got a 2003 90 Td5 pick up now, which is much more solid D3 TDV6 S 2005 - TorqTune, Privacy Glass, Remote FBH, 19" HSE Alloys, Boot liner, retrofit F&R PDC

Thanks for the encouragement, surpised you all want to see the rusty old girl!
Bill, excellent, thanks, will take you up on that offer
Still trying to decide on the springs, it already had some replacement normal springs on the rear that are in very good nic, only fronts need replacing really, am tempted to stick with the normal type, and spend the extra on slightly better shocks. De-carbon perhaps???
Thanks for the kind offer Pointyed, but Im going planning to convert her to rag top for some topless summer fun!
Another long evening tonight, got in at 10.30pm, and Im knackered. Its been a slow old job. Removed front wings for better access, every nut and bolt rusted on so most had to be cut off!
She looks a little sorry for herself!
Still cant believe how good the chassis is. It has had replacement outriggers fitted, done to a reasonable standard, but while its all exposed we are re welding and strengthening anyway
Cut more of the old footwell out today, decided to go the hole hog and ditch anything that wasnt quite up to scratch. Also plated and strengthened lower door pillar.
The cause of the vague steering has been traced to the two ball joint on either side of the steering idler, lots of play. Everywhere else is good though. Hopfully replace them tomorrow or saturday.
Dont suppose anyone has any military "Wolf" wheels hanging about??? Powered by :

I could pick up from Devon and bring North, perhaps meet you just off M5 if that helps, will be going South in next 10 days. If at first you don't succeed.... destroy all evidence that you tried in the first place!!

Watching with interest, nice job so far
My 90 also has really vague steering and I haven't been able to trace why despite replacing the damper and ball joint, if you get chance could you drop me a line with details of the above so I can look at mine and see if the problem is the same one? 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW

CFB, I think the steering idler that Sid is talking about is not applicable to your 90. The 90 has power steering? so the PS box is where the idler (or otherwise known as Steering Relay) is on a Series.
Your 90 will have a ball joint at the end of the drop arm from your PS box. Get someone to rock the steering from side to side with the wheels on the ground whilst you 'feel' each ball joint in turn for play. There should be no free play at all. You are more likely to find play in the joint nearest the PS box, as it is under the most strain. Silver TDV6 HSE

Hi Gareth, thanks for the info, I have already replaced those ball joints and it is still terribly vague, it won't hold a straight course and you have to constantly apply a little left or right lock to counter the wandering, not sure what else to try. The previous owner (Jowett 110) apparently replaced the steering box and swivels 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW
