Some very wise comments on this thread - I agree we are in for a "bumpy ride" and whilst I applaud Rudd and co. focussing on trying to set an example by reducing Govt spending - thats not enough. Drivesafe is spot on - we need a LCT - but on a tiered structure with people buying Ferraris paying alot (higher rate) more than someone buying a new Chrysler Voyager!
We have known for years the baby boomers were going to retire and spend big; we have also known for years that we have an ageing population and a reducing skilled workforce (as a business owner with 60 staff in WA I can tell you the latter is at crisis point here). Finally, we have known since the seventies that we would run out of oil eventually and as reserves ran down and the world population grew prices would rise. None of us saw the China / India wealth explosion coming so fast (and the +ve impact on WA and QLD) I guess - the fact is combine all those things and the next 10 years will be significantly harder for alot of Australians than the last 10 - especially for any young family with a mortgage and no public transport nearby. 2006 SE TDV6, remapped 185Kw, 545NM; Java / black leather; LR roof DVD; LR Expedition rack / LR ladder; LR side steps; LR light guards; OR drawer system; Elec brakes; extra 12V and hella sockets; LR raised air intake;ARB bar; Lightforce spotties; rear wheel carrier; Long Ranger 115l tank; GME 3440 UHF; TPMS; Traxide/Optima yellow / National Luna dual battery monitor; 6 x 18inch rims with General Grabber AT2's; mitchell bros tow hitch; OBIES rear window protector.

Dont forget ..a lot of us "baby boomers" worked or as es off during the recession we had
to have...took enormous risks only to see our super cut by a third in the recent stock market correction.
And, at our age, a house is some where you live, not a tradeable commodity.

The fact that as a segment of the population "baby boomers" are likley to spend alot in retirement is NO criticism (from my point of view) of baby boomers. Its a simple fact of life. They have worked hard (as you say) and have earnt the right to retire with wealth. Good on them. Unfortunatlely the result of an ageing wealthy population spending, combined with all the other issues we face (reduced workforce etc) is that it might increase inflation. Welcome to basic ecomomics. (I hope no offence was taken to any from My comments!) 2006 SE TDV6, remapped 185Kw, 545NM; Java / black leather; LR roof DVD; LR Expedition rack / LR ladder; LR side steps; LR light guards; OR drawer system; Elec brakes; extra 12V and hella sockets; LR raised air intake;ARB bar; Lightforce spotties; rear wheel carrier; Long Ranger 115l tank; GME 3440 UHF; TPMS; Traxide/Optima yellow / National Luna dual battery monitor; 6 x 18inch rims with General Grabber AT2's; mitchell bros tow hitch; OBIES rear window protector.

Using your argument they may as well lower the LCT to $30000 as really who needs anything more than a Kia Carnival or a ssaannnggyyooonnggg something or other?
It's a jealousy tax. A Ferrari would have a huge amount of tax and duties levied even if the LCT was abolished. "that bloke should pay a tax i don't" is plainly inequitable.

My comment on the breaks the baby boomers have had was certainly intended as a tongue in cheek reference but since we're discussing the hardships endured by the boomers - I can vouch for the fact that it wasn't just the baby boomers who lived through the 'recession we had to have' - I'm Gen X and it certainly effected me as I was heading into the workforce for the first time without any nestegg to fall back on. As for the boomers having worked hard - again thats hardly generation specific. What is fact is that the boomers have had a pretty easy run economically speaking, certainly much easier than their parents and its seems likely easier than the generations to follow them who will deal with the effects of aging populations and unaffordble housing.

So much for the promised conservative economic policy.
THe LCT, baby bonus to be means tested, medicare levy change = soclialist economic policy. Idealisticly driven rather than economically rational.
They havn't even started with the social policies yet
What will be in the next budget?
Politics of envy. Getting there is half the fun
