Advice required on Warn 9.5XP winch

Hi guys,

My Warn 9.5XP winch has stopped working. I'm just guessing the motor has corrosion in it. The solenoid pack is still clicking when trying to spool the winch and all connections are tight. Not sure what else would stop the motor from tunring.

I had it installed (2 years ago) along with the ARB BB at my local ARB store but they can't look at it until 4th June.

I did a quick search on the net to look for others with 9.5XP winch problems.

I found this on another forum

"Just FYI for people that use Warn 9.5 XP Winches with a feet forward mounting (like on some 100 Series bumpers). The motor has two drain slots 90 degrees from each other. The winch motor comes from the factory configured so it will drain when mounted feet down and the other drain hole is sealed with silicone. If you mount it feet forward, then the motor needs to be removed, the sealed drain hole opened and the other one sealed.

If you do not do this, then you will end up with a trashed motor if you get water in it."

I have no idea what they mean by "feet forward" but if the drain hole was not correctly aligned then maybe my motor is trashed. So how do you think I could ask my ARB store to tell me if the drain hole has been set up to properly drain water? The obvious reaction might be that the winch was installed correctly and you didn't ensure it was kept dry Evil or Very Mad and the bill is $$$$$$.

Any ideas on tackling this issue if I'm right?

And for the guys who have a Warn 9.5XP winch check that the drain hole is setup properly.

Thanks,

Cris

Thanks for the heads up Chris, and sorry to see you winch is not working.

Even though it's 2 years, I'd have a talk to them about it. They're meant to know what they're doing.

I'm going to get mine checked now!

G'Day Chris,
I did a Warn Technical training night last year and they covered this issue. "Feet down" means the mounting feet, I don't know which way they are fitted on the D3 ARB BB but if they are not pointing towards the ground then the factory drain hole needs to be covered up and the other drain hole unblocked. I'd say that D3's probably have the feet facing the front of the vehicle (makes for more compact installation) and if the factory blocked hole was not removed then it would fill with water like a bath. If the ARB dealer doesn't fix it for free then PM me.

Thanks Muppo,

It's going to ARB Southern next Wed and I'll have a peek at thedrain hole before then to keep them honest. The mounting I guess is feet forward.

Let you know the outcome.

For people with Warn 9.5 XP winches and ARB BB's - take note.

For others out there with this winch and ARB BB, it is very easy to check if the drain hole will drain water. Take off the the cover below the ARB BB which covers the winch and Intercooler/Radiator. Locate the motor of the winch and where the motor meets the winch drum you will see a very small slot (see pics above) and insert a small probe like a cable tie into the slot. If the cable tie stops against something rubbery then that will be silicon - your drain won't work. You will find at 90 degree to the drain at the bottom (facing to the front of the BB) the other drain hole and if you manage to poke the cable tie into the slot and it will feed into the slot very easily.

ARB Southern will repair my winch under warranty. The drain hole was not correctly postioned when originally installed more than 2 years ago.

Good to see they will fix it, they really have no choice when they fitted it wrong. Two years is a pretty good run from it with no drain hole. Warn are the best on the market IMHO and you'll find they will repair problems even after the warranty period within reason.
