Wanted/Interested BMW 3 Series Tourer 5-8yrs old

Interested in getting a 3 Series diesel estate to replace an aged Mondeo that's been as reliable as the sun. Anyone running one. Are they any good. Needed for commuting/pottering around/dogs etc. Are they any good? I'm thinking reliability should be OK-ish?

John,

I ran a 330d Touring for 5 years and did 130k miles in it which were pretty 'hard' miles including several fully laden trips. I traded it in for the D3 in the end, but I do miss it. Fabulous to drive, pretty cheap to maintain i.e. no more than any other similar sized car from Ford, Vauxhaul, Pug, only let me down once which was an electrical failure on the wiring loom and pretty much everything on it still worked when I sold it. In fact I was probably mad getting rid of it, but I fancied a change and am having fun in the D3 Very Happy

Can honestly say you won't regret it - would buy another without thinking twice. Find a decent independant garage too and servicing is even cheaper.

HTH

We've had a 7 year old 2.0 petrol Touring for a few years now. AFAIK it drives okay - not heard any complaints certainly - presumably better if you get the bigger engine but this one is just for carrying dogs and kids around, and pottering about in town squeezing into spaces in which the D3 would never fit.
Not the most terribly exciting car in the world but it does the trick, brilliantly good for a 2nd/3rd car. It looks handsome, has a big enough boot, leather, 6CD etc... It's comfortable on long journeys and reasonably quiet thought havn't gone more than a few hours cruising in it at a time.

Reliability, this one has had one or two problems but nothing that couldn't be sorted soon enough. A few engine management problems but none were too expensive or long to sort. The BMW dealer here does ask a fair bit for repair or service work so perhaps best to adhear to Pete's advice of an independant dealer. Running costs seem okay too, you get a traditional 'dial' showing you MPG rather than flicking through a trick computer so you can always keep checking it. About 40 is what we get on this one or there abouts.

Not sure if there's much else to say - ask away if you have any questions and I'll see what I can find out.

Thanks CY - that's really useful! Much appreciated. I see the other third of the CY fleet has just the same amount of TLC as the D3! Thumbs Up
