| The Earth House / Round House type thing |
|
The building of the Boughrood “Earth House” or "Round House" has started, got the main frame up today.
Certainty of death, 'small' chance of success... What are we waiting for?

Wish I wasn't a 4 hour drive away (and that I didn't spend all day on chores here) Carbon footprint? I neither know nor give a damn

Soft drinks only simon Yes its a place to socialise and take shelter when Wales decides to throw nasty weather at us.
Oh well its 06.51 Sunday morning off up to the Boughrood track to continue the build. Got to work out how to make a fire place and chimney today. Unlike standard round houses that would have had a fire in the middle of the floor, allowing the smoke to rise and exit through a hole in the centre of the roof. Our round house has a tree in the middle So our fire will be against a rock wall at the side of the building. Certainty of death, 'small' chance of success... What are we waiting for?

Depends how posh you want it, but here's an idea - I've made a workshop heater in the past by cutting the side our of an old gas bottle and then connecting some flue piping to the top and up out of the roof with it. Work's great and the flue piping radiates the heat so you'll get even more benefit. Permagrin by................. TorqTune

Are you having a thatched roof? or have banana trees started growing in Boughrood forest due to global warming? Silver TDV6 HSE

we're thinking of putting the structural timbers in, then covering it with an old waterproof sheet, this will then be covered with pine needles, soil & tree branches to disguise the membrane, this will hopefully create a place for furns etc to grow, the benefit of doing this is that the roof will actually be waterproof and that we can blend the house into the forest which will hide it from people who don't know it's there.
We've also been building to the contours of the land and once it's done you'll only know it's there if you come in from one angle. the round house is in a quarry so height's not an issue inside. I'm Powered by........Diesel
