Just wondered what people think about the future prospects for D3. If you remember the Disco 2 was hailed as class leader in ’98 and then quickly started to look a bit dated. The way I see it most RR/RRS buyers just won’t care about increased running costs, and the Freelander 2 will satisfy a good percentage of potential Disco buyers while costing significantly less to run, especially when it gets stop-start. I reckon the Disco will need a redesign before either RR or RRS to reduce running costs. Or else LR will push it further upmarket away from what I think of as the core Disco customers.

The biggest problem for LR selling these things must be price and the ugly looks (which I'm sure LR now regret if the way dealers train their sales staff is anything to geo by).
The first the get around by practically giving them away, which leaves little economic headroom for a good enough refresh to do anything about the second. I expect the car to be with us for quite a while, but produced in ever dwindling numbers, especially if fuel/greenhouse/economics stay the way they are for a few years.
A fundamental redesign would have to address weight/consumption as well as looks Grey Disco HSE and Yellow Exige S

The FFRR and RRS are due to have their major remodelling plans finalised during 2009 for roll out by 2012 apparently ..if Tata stick to the original plan as indicated then you won't see much change to the D3 other than the 3.0l TDV6 and minor cosmetics until the D4 comes along in 2014 or so. I disagree
You wouldn't want a car that holds 7 adults and tows a heavy caravan to weigh much less than the D3 as this would seriously compromise the stability of the whole thing. Furthermore, I think it looks great - each to their own.
Perhaps you are confusing the D3 with a Freelander The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

They could go the Q7 route, make it more curvy so that there is less space in side and still looks fugly outside Bigger engines are really only where the D3 falls down, some of the extra toys FFRR has would be nice too DS3 TDV6 HSE

It was 9 years old cosmetically and nearly 30 years old mechanically by then - how could it be viewed as a class leader? I think the D3 model life cannot be compared with the D2. The D2 was an update of the previous model. It was hampered by archaic build methods that dated back to the Classic Range Rover.
The D3 is a clean slate, and looks fantastic in my opinion. It is so good, it is probably years ahead of its time in some respects, which is why I think it will be with us for a good few years before it gets a major change.
Engine's aside, one area that I think it is important for Land Rover to keep up to date is the driving and convienience technology. For example, the sat nav is behind in the competition now. Silver TDV6 HSE
